At its peak production during World War I Kaskaskia Manufacturing Company produced over one million pieces of fabric per day; however after the war it ceased operations entirely due to competitive globalization forces. In 1969 Harry Crane founded Crane Paper Company headquartered in Crest Hill with manufacturing capacity for 250 thousand sheets per day (). By 2000 Crane Paper had closed its doors permanently but left behind a legacy of innovation that continues today with companies such as Allied Signal (), Sunbeam () and Hewlett Packard (). Today there are over 100 businesses operating within a five-mile radius of Crest Hill proper with employment totaling over seventy thousand people ().

In 1907, Sears & Roebuck opened its first store within 500 feet of Crest Hill when it moved out of its original location across the river at 110th Street and Randolph Avenue on the west side of Chicago Heights neighborhood near Oak Lawn Cemetery while still keeping an open market day each week outside its doors on Saturdays across Chicago Boulevard between Mayfair Avenue and Belmont Avenue (now Irving Park Road). This move increased foot traffic into Sears’ new store quadrupling sales over what had been achieved at their old location alone since 1905! By 1914, as part of a general trend throughout all downtownChicago stores for larger physical sizes with more exposed corridors - Harper's department store relocated from Michigan Street to Randolph Street between Madison Square Garden Neighborhood on one hand and Armoury Place on the other - Sears had vacated most if not all their older locations inside city limits completely giving way to suburban shopping malls that would become defining characteristics for Chicagoland during this time period including Douglas Center mall opening in 1945 adjacent to Menard Airport followed by Arlington Heights Mall opening just south of Oak Lawn Cemetery less than 10 years later both making Cresthill essentially indistinguishable from these newest high-density urban markets as retail space diminished even further while prices continued to rise throughout much of this decade due largely to resurgent manufacturing activity outside metropolitan areas following World War II suburbanization beginning well before suburbanization/industrial restructuring ever happened here especially leading directly to rapidly rising prices here during this era becoming emblematic once againof rapidly rising prices nationally during this postwar period hereinafter known as “the lowlands”
