When Crest Hill, Illinois was founded in 1871, it was a small rural town with only a few households. Crest Hill is a small town in central Illinois, United States. The population was 3,453 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria-Naperville-Rockford, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Crest Hill community began as a farmers' market and gristmill on the edge of a wooded area near the present day intersection of First Street and School Road. The first settlers were white men from Ohio who arrived in 1827 to start what would become Crest Hill. The name "Crest" (hill) was given to this location by early settler John Wimmer because he saw an elevation above his farm called "Crest hill". According to one story, when General James K. Polk visited Crest Hill during the Mexican–American War in 1846, he stopped at the gristmill on School Road and ordered all of his officers and men to stop for dinner because he had no food left with him. After returning home, he reported that Mexico had agreed to give up California in return for Texas being surrendered but they had not given up New Mexico which was still controlled by Santa Anna. This led to American forces marching into Mexico and capturing El Paso on February 14, 1847 while Polk was touring that region as commander-in-chief; this event is celebrated annually as Patriot's Day in Crest Hill. The first post office opened in 1850, and it remained open until 1907 when it moved to Peoria. At that time there were only three residents living in Crest Hill: Mrs., Mr., & Miss Phebe Dickey; these people all worked for local businesses such as bakery ovens or grocery stores on First Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue until 1949 when their shops closed down due to high rates of inflation which destroyed most small businesses throughout Illinois during that period known as the Great Depression). In 1951 crest hill became part of Rockford Township under then Rockford Mayor Harry Sargent's administration after township leaders decided against annexing neighboring townships like Carbondale or Normal because they felt those townships would have been too closely populated by Rockford residents while having less control over their own government than they desired (this decision has been criticized by some current residents who feel that annexation would have increased Rockford's size whereas they desire more autonomy). In recent years many new subdivisions have been built within close proximity of crestHill making it difficult for retirees or others seeking privacy and peace from other neighborhoods nearby to maintain a living space outside their homes since many yards are now filled with cars parking directly next door or parked right outside windows! On October 17th 1998 Crest HIll – through its Citizens Advisory Committee – successfully petitioned then Governor Rod Blagojevich (D)to create a state park at what is now known as Southeast corner lot #1 across from Northwest High School just east of I-88 where once two Industrial sites sat before being renovated into housing units today’s “ Gateway Park” . Crest Hill was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is now a ghost town. Crest Hill was founded in 1892 by farmers who moved from the then-larger city of Chicago to central Illinois. The first post office at Crest Hill was established in 1895. The population of Crest Hill peaked at 150 people in 1907, but declined thereafter and by 1950 had shrunk to just 10 residents. In the early 21st century, some residents of Crest Hill began making claims that they have seen "ghosts" living among them. One resident recalled hearing someone walking around during the night and another said she saw somebody standing on top of a building while it was still morning. Some residents also reported feeling like they were being watched or touched when no one was around. In response to these reports, the local police department conducted an investigation into the matter but found no evidence that any ghosts were present in Crest Hill. Despite this lack of evidence, many locals continue to claim that they have seen Unknowns walking around their town since the late 21st century; some even say they've caught glimpses of something white hovering over their homes during nightime outings! Although it's impossible to confirm or deny these sightings completely, there seems to be significant interest within Cresthill community in exploring every possibility as to what could be causing such activity seemingly out of nowhere...
