Crest Hill is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,332 at the 2000 census. Crest Hill is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is bordered by the city of Chicago to the north, Northwest Side of Chicago to the east and south, and Lakeview Park to the west. The village dates back to 1836 when it was organized as a post office within what would later become Cicero Township. In 1857, Crest Hill became a town due to its annexation by Cicero Township. The name "Crest Hill" originated from an elevation in town that resembled "the crest of a hill". The first school in Crest Hill was built on land donated by Mrs. Lunsford in 1865 and named for her mother-in-law - then Mrs. John Haines - who had also given money for the school building. Mr. Haines served as superintendent from 1867 until his death in 1893; during his time, Crest High School (later renamed North Central High School) opened its doors on October 1st, 1867 with only thirteen students enrolled. In 1870–71, George Peabody donated land to build what would become North Central College—the first college in Cook County and one of only two colleges open to women at that time (the other being Bryn Mawr Female College). Classes began classes on October 1st 1870 with nineteen students; twelve years later on January 15th 1888 North Central College attained full accreditation from the American Association for Teacher Education (AATE). Crest High School closed its doors effective February 15th 1918 due largely to World War I hostilities which interrupted enrollment at both schools; however future education opportunities were restored thanks to local philanthropists such as Julius Rosenwald and Samuel Untermeyer who funded early collegiate expansion through their organizations such as America Educates (AE). During World War II many jobs were available for people living near Chicago but few were available for those living outside of Cook County; this led some residents of Crest Hill towards joining up with military service instead; many men left their homes during World War II while others stayed behind because they could not find work elsewhere after leaving their families behind or because they wanted more than just manual labor jobs under wartime conditions. Despite these difficulties some people persevered and managed to find civilian careers despite having no prior experience working with computers or technology which would soon play an important role in modern society On September 11th 1961 evidence surfaced linking J Edgar Hoover's secret FBI investigation into McCarthyism – code name COINTELPRO – with activities taking place within Crest Hills high school called "The Blacksburg Incident". According To investigations made after that date it appears that agents from Bureau's counterintelligence unit infiltrated local schools through infiltration Resistance Schools throughout Illinois using similar methods employed against Japanese Americans during WWII including entrapment techniques such as social engineering games involving making children act out situations related to national security issues unique enough so investigators could track down individuals involved without embarrassing or incriminating themselves In 1969–70 authorities confiscated equipment used by local resistance group The Blackshears inside Crest High School following accusations that members had been caught stealing property belonging to Chicagoland Business Men's League vice president Lyndon LaRouche . ! now known as Lyndon LaRouche Middle School! Crest Hill is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. Crest Hill was founded in 1868 on the east side of what is now Crest Hill Road. The town name comes from a ridge that runs along the south side of the community and forms an imposing sight when seen from downtown. It took until 1903 for Crest Hill to annex its neighboring communities of Bedford and Belvidere. In 1908, Crest Hill became one of only two towns in Kane County to be incorporated as a village; other villages had been established by 1860s.[2] The first business in Crest Hill was a general store operated by John Gifford and his brother Nathaniel Gifford. A post office called Crest Hill was opened in 1870, and remained open until 1909. At that time, it became one of several villages listed on theNational Register of Historic Places[3]. The first school in Cresthill was built on Summit Avenue about 1880-81; it operated for three years before being replaced by a gristmill which still stands today. In 1892-93, construction began on what would become known as "the dam" which would later produce flour for local bakeries.[4] By 1907, many small businesses had sprung up around downtown including a bakery[5], grocery store[6], pie shop[7], candy store,[8], movie theater[9], doctor's office,[10] law firm[11] and more. According to the 2000 census count,[12] there were 2,994 people residing in Crest Hill with 1% African American or black residents living within its boundaries while over 99% white.[13]
