Crest Hill, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is located on the east side of Chicago and straddles the border of Lake Michigan to the west. The population was 5,205 at the 2010 census. Crest Hill is named after General John A. crest (1812-1890), who served as Major General in the Union army during the American Civil War. The first gun barrel manufactured in Crest Hill was made by George Wible in 1868. At that time gun barrels were made from oak or other hard woods and were about 8 feet long and 2 inches wide. The first gun barrel to be exported from Crest Hill was that made by Eli Whitney for use in his cotton gin near Baltimore, Maryland. In 1878, it was reported that two brothers had started a blacksmith shop in Crest Hill for the purpose of manufacturing guns and other firearms products using iron instead of wood. Armoury stores soon followed suit, with various types of pistols being produced including revolvers and shotguns using iron sights and triggers while still incorporating wood handles and stocks. By 1899 there were 10 businesses employing 159 men making gun barrels including smithing shops (20), rifle frames (10), saddles (5) - all done locally - cutters (10), weavers (5), printers (7) - doing typecasting - lockyers (4) - doormen/ Maids of Honor services (-2), blacksmiths (+1). By 1911 there were 21 businesses employing 413 men making all types of guns with an output value of $8 million dollars!

Snively served as acting mayor when the regular Mayor refused to run for re-election because he did not want to leave office while his daughter attended college. In 1916, the Village Board created a park which would become known as Crest Hill Park after the village's residents donated $10,000 towards its creation. The first president of the town board who resided in Crest Hill was Drury Ewing (1914-1978). Drury owned several properties within the boundaries of crest hill and played an important role in developing and maintaining civic life within the village through his donations and public service opportunities.
