Crest Hill is a small town in Champaign County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,272 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Crest Hill was founded in 1848 and incorporated as a town in 1875. In 1925, it became an unincorporated community and has since been consolidated into the larger town of Champaign-Urbana. The first inhabitants of Crest Hill were Swedish immigrants who arrived there in 1847. By 1850, the village had a population of twenty-one people and by 1865 it numbered seventy-six people. The initial land purchases for Crest Hill were made by Colonel John Borden from his father-in-law Daniel Webster and Drury Hopkins among others. On December 3, 1848, the first meeting to organize what would become Crest Hill took place at the home of Mrs. Eliza Sperry with thirteen attendees present including Reverend Fenton Hall (the first pastor), Wm Homan (a blacksmith), Ebenezer McGillicuddy (a builder), Mrs. Thurlow Weed(a milliner), Mr. John Gist (an auctioneer), Captain Levi Coffin (of the Fourth Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry) and David Iverson (of Lebanon Valley.) At this meeting it was decided that “ Township” would not be created until later on when more property had been acquired so that a township could have room to grow without infringing on other townships or villages within Champaign County which at that time formed part of Urbana Township 11 miles north east of where Crest Hill now stands” The early settlers did not want their new settlement to get too close to any other settlements so they voted unanimouslyto name their new town after General George Washington instead which they did on January 7th,1849 . By 1870 – two years after its incorporation – Crest hill had a population of 378 people with homes built mostly along Elm Street between State Road 15A & High School Road but also some around Church Street near Park Avenue as well as in parts of Parkdale/Lockridge sections located east & west of Center Street/Highway 41). Most homes were single family dwellings but there are also several multiunit buildings such as one house built by S P Morgan which still stands today across from US Highway 40 off Lockridge Road just south of Interstate 68 exit 1114; another house built by Bostwick & Company opposite US Highway 40 off Center Street just northwest of I-68 exit 1115; one large frame garage built by J R Dunn next door to Masonic Lodge #1 adjacent to Depot Road just northwest corner I-680Exit 1116). Many residents worked either side of Central Illinois Railroad tracks jobs available both day & night including many farmers who raised corn, haystack chickens (& sometimes cattle) and ran dairies; mechanics such as blacksmiths who repaired cars or machines; laborers doing odd jobs like building roads or bridges etc.; actors portraying roles in plays performed at local theaters like those done at Herrick’s Opera House down Market Street close to current day Marshall Field ShoppingCenter); soldiers stationed nearby during World War One such as Camp Dickermann about three miles east directly across from original Settlement site now occupied by Marshall Fields ShoppingCenter) Each week during winter months businesses closed up shop then reopened weeks later once school resumed; some families used open Hearth ovens left over from previous winter evenings starting fires inside for warmth until morning before departing for work each day leaving their Hearth ovens parked out front while working inside “chanting” “cooperating” etc.). Families usually gathered around these fires all clad in heavy coats except for men wearing nothing more than short pants Religion played an important role within this community with services being provided by ministers such as Reverend Fenton Hall Sunday mornings beginning promptly at 7am followed by Bible reading & hymn singing led by Rev E H Carpenter before getting started on various tasks associated with worship including preparing breakfast items such as oatmeal or pancakes served hot onto plates while others chopped wood cooking bacon or sausage while others baked bread etc.) With schools having opened up throughoutChampaignCounty similar services were offered until Richfield Prairie Elementary School opened up about two miles east across High Line Rd from civilization outside what is now known locally simply as "Prairie"
Crest Hill was first settled by the Potawatomi in 1786. They renamed their settlement after the hills near Edinburgh, Scotland. Crest Hill became a fashionable area for white people to live because of its fertile land and easy access to transportation. The town grew rapidly due to the timber trade, and many mills were built in the early 19th century. In 1847, Crest Hill was chartered as a village, and it became an incorporated town in 1903. It is now a part of the city of Wheeling, West Virginia.
