Crest Hill is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,457 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Chicago. The first name for Crest Hill may have been derived from the Native American word "Kiska," meaning "high ground." Crest Hill was incorporated as a village in 1892. At that time it consisted of only about 100 residents and had no school, hospital or other public services. In 1916, the village merged with neighboring Hawthorne to form the current community of Crest Hollow. The growth of Chicago led to an increase in demand for businesses and people living near downtown began moving out of their homes in search of more space and money. Businesses closed or moved away as people stopped wanting to live within walking distance of all the new services that were opening up in downtownChicago. When business declined again during World War II due to shortages of materials needed for war production, many residents decided they would rather leave than continue paying taxes whichsupported businesses that remained open despite difficult times. In 1951, Crest Hollow lost its charter because it had not met financial requirements set by then-Mayor Richard Monell; however, it continued to serve as a village until 1978 when it became part of the newly created city of Chicago proper. In 2000, after years of discussion between Mayor Daley's administration and various community groups about what should happen to Chestnut Ridge Road which forms much of Crest Hollow's border (and provides access to Interstate 80), voters passed a resolution authorizing dismissal from city government for all Village residents except those who paid property tax on their home(s). This action removed most vestiges remainingof communalism within City hall while also allowing individuals with homeownership rights over land within Village boundaries full ownership thereof without anyCity dues/responsibilities.(1) Today nearly all activities taking place within Village boundaries are conducted byIndividuals owning homeswithin its borders- including Police Dept., Schools & Hospitals/, water management etc... Crest Hill is a small town in northern Illinois, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the McLean County seat of Crest Hill. The village was founded in 1854 by James Hickey and his wife Anna and their three children: John Hickey, George Hickey, and Margaret Hickey. It was named after the Heights of Crest Hill in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1902, Crest Hill had a population of 576 and became an incorporated village with a government consisting of a mayor and five trustees. The first post office opened in 1907. During World War II, Crest Hill served as headquarters for the Third U.S Army Corps Area Headquarters under General Dwight D Eisenhower during Operation Market Garden in Nazi-occupied Holland on September 15–17 1944. In 1951, the village became home to Northwestern Illinois University (NUI) when it moved from Chicago to Evanston as one of four universities accepted into the newly formed Big Ten Conference; NUI remains located there today. During the 1970s and 1980s, Crest Hill experienced rapid growth due to its location near Northwestern Illinois University's campus; however, this prosperity came at a cost: crime rates began to increase rapidly while property values decreased significantly. At one point in 1986-87 over 50% of all incidents reported by police involved students or staff at NSU; since then they have trended downward although some high profile events have attracted attention such as a carjacking that occurred on October 10th 2008 which resulted in community protests dubbed "CrestHill Rising". In 2013-14 Cresthill voted unanimously not to annex Northwest Illinois University into their School District so that would bring about more equality amongst Northwestern ILUSA graduates within their school district but this decision has not been universally well received among many residents who feel annexed schools infringe upon their autonomy & independence
Crest Hill was founded in 1836 by a group of farmers as a new town on the crest of a hill in central Illinois. The town quickly grew and developed into an important community, serving as the county seat for Cook County and hosting a variety of businesses and services. In 1886, Crest Hill became the first incorporated city in Cook County. The city's growth led to changes in its demographics and economy, which contributed to its decline after World War II.
