Crest Hill, Illinois is a small town located in the northwestern corner of Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is bordered by the cities of Elmhurst and Chicago to the north, Hinsdale to the northwest and Bartlett to the east. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. The first ammunition consumed in Crest Hill was ballistics powder used by American soldiers in World War I. Ammunition production began in 1867 when three men hired by George Peabody started manufacturing gun powder here. From 1865 until 1868 ammunition also came from Hannibal, Missouri. In 1870 J.H Dixon & Sons manufactured shotgun rounds here for Springfield Armory Company (now Springfield Armory Inc.). In 1896 US Ammunition company opened plant here making rifle cartridges and shot shells for military use as well as munitions for other industries including explosives and automobiles. In 1922 Armoury Ammunition Manufacturing Co., predecessor of Armstrong Ammunition Corporation took over US Ammo factory operations and continued producing rifle cartridges until it closed its doors in 1969. At its peak Armstrong employed 1,500 people including 300 women who made bullets and artillery rounds out of lead-acid battery acid which were reloadable into serviceable form using simple tools provided by Armoury; these rounds are still offered today through various distributors across North America. By 1870, Crest Hill had a population of 1,500 residents and it remained an agricultural community until after World War II when aluminum production began to increase in Illinois and Crest Hill became an important aluminum manufacturing center.
