During World War II, Country Club Hills emerged as an important wartime supply center due to its location just outside Ofhearght Army Air Field along I-90; during that time it also became home to three General Motors plants: GMC Truck Division (now Chevrolet), GMC Buick Division (now Cadillac) and GMC Fords Division (now Ford). In 1955, Arthur Ashe played his first competitive match at Country Club Hills when he won a professional tennis tournament there against Gaston Lugano; that same year country club members opened their first pool hall which remains open today as Oneida Pool Hall & Visitor Center. In 1966, Country Club Hills voted to secede from DuPage County and become its own municipality; this event led to years of tension between DuPage County officials and the townspeople before finally being resolved by an agreement made between both entities back in 1978 which grantedDuPage County jurisdiction over only two out ofCountryClubHills' six police precincts while allowingCountryClubHillstooperateanddevelopallofits OWNPoliceDepartment.(the remaining four precincts are presently managed by adjacent Northbrook Township.) In 2007, following extensive renovations funded by private donations including $10 million from real estate mogul Leonard Einhorn IV., Country Club Hills received its first ever major award - distinction as "Best Place To Live" by Forbes magazine - after winning a competition run by television network CBS reality series "The Amazing Race". At that time, revenues from operations totaled $49 million dollars making it one of America's 15th wealthiest villages according to Forbes Magazine's listOfThe Top 100 Villages For All Families®that year.
