Country Club Hills, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community has been around since 1881 when it was founded as "The Village of country club hills". It became a country club in 1912 and remained so until its sale to members of the Velda family in 2002. The first golf course in Country Club Hills was built by George Velda on land he owned near current day Elmwood Park Boulevard and Irving Park Road. At that time Country Club Hills consisted of only three homes and twelve residents. In 1881, GeorgeVelda donated 153 acres (59 ha) to the village for development into a town with an library, schoolhouse, post office, and cemetery. In 1912 Country Club Hills changed its name to "The Village of country club hills" due to objections from some who felt that the word sounded too similar to Country Club Lighthouse which had just been built two miles away on Lake Shore Drive. However, these objections were eventually overruled and "the village" continued to exist even though the golf course moved several times over the years until it finally closed in 2002 because of financial troubles caused by changes in membership patterns within society as well as changing technology which affected sports leagues' ability to generate revenue.
