Collinsville, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. Collinsville began as a Presbyterian settlement in 1853 and became a city in 1903. In 2002, Collinsville merged with neighboring Rockford to form the largest city in Illinois by population size (Springfield had been the second-largest city). The first settler in what is now Collinsville was James A. Brown who built his home on land donated by John Boudreau. The town was named for General Ulysses S. Grant who died at Fort Donelson on April 12, 1865 during the American Civil War and was buried there near his friend and comrade-in-arms George Armstrong Custer. Collinsville had its start as a Presbyterian settlement when Reverend Denton McMillan organized an assembly of religious believers from Rockford on November 6, 1853 from which date until 1860 it functioned as an unofficial village or 'congregational hamlet'. On October 4th of that year, Major General Oliver Otis Howard moved into position about one mile east ofpresent day Collinsville upon orders received from President Abraham Lincoln following the Battle of Antietam which occurred on October 17th of that year near Harper's Ferry Maryland took place between Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee and Federal troops under General George Washington Carleton resulting in more than 54 deaths among both sides with over 150 wounded including 50 officers and men! There are no records remaining today to document this particular event but it is presumed that Governor David Yates ordered Howard's move due to news reports linking Lee to high treason charges against him thereby endangering his army's cohesion; he would later be impeached for doing so! When the newly formed state of Illinois was admitted into Union on February 14th 1867 Collinsville became one of its first towns taking advantage of new legislation providing for incorporation within 60 days or face forfeiture thereof by state government if not complied with - also allowing for annexation by other states should such happen without their consent! Incorporation came about as result of a special election held January 16th 1861 where James Fenton won an seat on the school board after defeating incumbent Amos Kendall 3 votes to 2! When Townshend Rifles opened fire upon members attending a constitutional Convention being held at State Capitol Building early morning hours September 11th 1871 few injuries were reported however 5 citizens including future Mayor James Fenton were killed instantly when their home collapsed due tounknown causes; this devastating tragedy has long been labelled as one of history's largest acts of terrorism? Asbury Park Press ran headlines like "Townshend Riflemen Open Fire Upon Citizens At Constitutional Convention" shortly before their collapse leaving behind unanswered questions about why such terrible events transpired only feet away from some OF THE LARGEST BUSINESSES IN AMERICA? One theory suggests that widespread panic caused many individuals present at the convention simply couldn't control themselves and let loose with uncontrolled gunfire – something they would surely regret ever happening again? Aftermath investigations revealed no evidence connecting any individual or organization responsible for either incident however conspiracy theorists continue to circulate theories alleging foul play by local officials looking out for themselves rather then protecting their citizens? Whatever happened during those fateful September 11th hours remains unknown but forever memorialized through lawsuits filed against multiple parties involved?! In 1902, when Collinsville merged with neighboring Rockford it did so largely because they shared much common infrastructure including water systems, schools (both public and private), hospitals (including St Joseph’s hospital), post office etcetera making life easier for everyone involved - similar decisions were made regarding other cities merging into larger municipalities throughout Illinois throughout the 1920s & 1930s!!! Today’s economy relies heavily upon agriculture especially corn production although manufacturing continues to play an important role locally too; many jobs have been created here since World War II thanks to military service/industry contracts!! With over two million residents living within commuting distance there’s never been enough opportunity hereto provide quality education or good jobs opportunities otherwise these doors would keep slamming shut!!
