Collinsville is a small town in far northeastern Illinois. It was founded in 1849 by John Collins, who mined coal and gold there. The population of Collinsville reached 1,500 in 1925, but declined to about 350 in 2000. Today, the only remaining businesses are a few groceries and the post office. After John Collins died in 1853, his son-in-law James Ransom took over management of the post office. On July 1st 1908, Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked white men working at a local mineowned by Augustus Kelley & Company (later renamed Phelps Dodge) with automatic rifles while their families were home from dinner; he killed nine whites and wounded twenty others before being captured by local militia members on July 3rd 1908 at Millport Road just south of present day Main Street in what is now Carbon Hill Cemetery; he was tried for war crimes on August 12th 1908 before being executed by hanging on October 14th 1908 at Old Fort Wayne Fort Dearborn outside today's downtown Collinsville; this event marks the end of World War I in Illinois

As part of its commemoration program, the Village has designated October 6th as "World War I Day" since then every year on that date.
