Collinsville is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first residents of Collinsville were some of the first Europeans to settle in what is now Cook County. They came from England and Scotland in the late 1700s and early 1800s looking for land to farm and build homes on. In 1814, they founded a small community called Harmony which consisted of just 12 settlers. The original Harmony school was built in 1815-1816 by Friends Meeting House members John Cogan and Samuel Morse. In 1818, when Illinois became a state, Collinsville voted to become its capital. On November 3, 1820, it was officially renamed Springfield after General James K. Polk who had won the Ulysses S Grant presidential election that year as president of the United States. At that time Springfield was just over half way between Chicago and St Louis (now Ferguson). It served as the capital until 1828 when Chicago took over that role. From 1830 to 1860, Collinsville was home to one of the most important cotton plantations in Illinois – known as "Old Briar" – operated by Andrew Johnson’s father-in-law George Washington Carver Jr.. After Johnson’s win in 1860, Springfield Becomes an seething mass of violence following his inauguration as Ulysses S Grant’s “czar”; only Old Briar remained untouched during this time period due largely to its owner’s efforts to keep it running smoothly despite government attempts at reformatting it numerous times throughout its history Partially because Springfield had lost much business due southward migration during this time period many jobs also migrated away from Collinsville altogether becoming located mainly along I-55 or even out into other counties such as DuPage or Macomb . This exodus led eventually lead directly towards downtown Chicago's decline beginning around 1870 while still keeping some businesses open within walking distance but these days most businesses have closed down completely leaving behind very little evidence remaining today aside from a few extremely low income housing units

By 1861, only 50 people remained in the town limits; by 1865, it had all but disappeared from sight due to factors such as railroad construction and immigration that replaced agriculture as Collinsville's mainstay.
