Scope mounts were a type of mount used in artillery, for attachment of an objective lens to the breech or forward end of a cannon, so that the bombardier could see the target directly. The first such mount was invented by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and perfected by Giovanni Antonio della Porta in 1798. A later design, developed by John Browning and George Stephenson, incorporated a screw thread on one arm to attach the objective lens to the breech rod (or other main arm), while another screwthread attached the image tube or “extractor” to either side of the cartridge case (the powder charge). The early rifled cannons like culverins and lancers had their barrels threaded at right angles into theirWN barrel shrouds which gave rise to various scopes being used with these guns: this included both open sights and close up/diopter sights. By 1814 all but three British guns had been converted to muzzle loaders & thus no need for scopes any more! However some conversions continued until about 1850 when new breech Loading Guns became popular!! With modern firearms there is now no reason not use scope mounts on modern arms
