The population of Cicero reached 5,000 by 1870, but it declined rapidly thereafter due to industrialization and economic decline. In 1951, Cicero was designated as a national historic district and has since seen significant progress in restoration and renovation efforts. Today, Cicero remains an important center for local government and education within the Cook County area. In addition to its history as a community hub, Cicero also contains several extant buildings from various periods of American history including the Illinois State Capitol (1853), John Lennon's childhood home (1946), and Stonington Hall (1872).
