To finance this huge project several banks contributed money; but because advances had already been made in transportation methods such as railroads and canals much larger sums were needed still to cover costs over an extended period. When finally paid off in 1865 ($11 million), this original appropriation represented only 0.5% percent (or about $8 million)of all federal spending during those years.— Today’s cost including interest payments would amount to more than $200 billion.— Many important new businesses were established during this time including Armour & Co., John Dennison & Sons cigars (later J&J Cigars), Sears Roebuck & Co., Mutual Life Insurance Company and many others which continue to thrive today.— In 1857 Charles Dickens wrote his famous novel "Dickensiana" while living at 31st Street Stationer’s Office next door to Dearborn Street railway station.( Dickens lived there until his death on January 14th 1870.)
