From here they traded goods with other parts of Illinois and beyond. The first homes on Chicago Ridge were built by settlers in 1840-1841. They were small, two-story buildings with narrow porches that overlooked fields or waterways near their farms. By 1845, however, many people had moved to Chicago Ridge because of its strategic location at the junction of several major routes connecting transportation hubs in what is now central Illinois: railroads provided access to markets all over America; industrial businesses wanted close proximity to customers; and military installations needed strong defenses against attack from surrounding countries such as Mexico and Japan. During World War I, Chicago Ridge served as a training ground for USAAF pilots. Afterward it became popular tourist destination for visitors from across Illinois and neighboring states who loved its natural beauty as well as its history dating back to before even America's founding when groups of Native Americans lived hereabouts long before white settlement began in this region (see Chicagoland map below). In 1922, President Warren G Harding dedicated much of downtown Chicago Heights (now part of DowntownChicago) to honor soldiers killed or missing in action during World War I while also creating jobs for local citizens who contributed $1 per day toward construction costs (this program continues today). That same year saw opening of first amusement park on present day Michigan Avenue which remains one of Chicagoland's most iconic destinations today: Six Flags Over Michigan!
