Chicago Ridge is a small town in the northwestern corner of Illinois. It is located on the edge of the Chicago metropolitan area and has a population of about 1,000. The name "Chicago Ridge" was given to the community by General John Pershing because it was one of only two places in Illinois where troops could be quartered without fear of being raided by the enemy. The first settlers in Chicago Ridge were farmers who came from Kentucky and Indiana. They established a farmstead in 1833 and began to raise crops. In 1851, they moved to what is now known as Chicago Heights, which consisted of three scattered homes on a bluff overlooking the Chicago River. By 1870, there were over fifty families living in Chicago Ridge. Many of these people had come from eastern Kentucky and West Virginia when their farms were confiscated by General Order No. 9 of March 9, 1861, which ordered all men between the ages of eighteen and thirty-five to leave their homes for three years and go into military service in any county within Illinois or Wisconsin that offered military duty (this order applied to civilians as well). After three years had passed, many of these people had returned home and resumed farming or looking for new opportunities. Some original residents still live in Chicago Ridge today including some who have lived there since 1900! One such resident is Mrs. Betty Walls who lives on acreage that once belonged to her great-grandfather! In addition to her agricultural pursuits, Mrs. Walls also serves as president (since 2013)ofthe local chapter (or organization)ofWomen’s United Service Organization (WUSO). Harriet Tubman once said: “If you want something done hard enough, it’s usually done by somebody else; but if you try to do it yourself, you’ll find out how hard it is!” The women's club provides support services such as financial counseling and summer garden maintenance for low-income residents in the neighborhood adjacent to her home!
