Chicago Ridge is a small, rural community located in Kane County, Illinois. It was settled in 1836 by Nicholas and Anna McDermott. The name Chicago Ridge comes from the fact that there were no hills or mountains in the area at that time, so settlers had to travel up and down the ridges to get to their crops and homes. In 1849, Chicago Ridge was organized as a township. In 1877, it became a village. On December 14, 1903, Chicago Ridge became part of the city of Aurora. On October 1, 1907, Aurora annexed Cubsville Township which included parts of Chicago Ridge. on December 31st 1909 Bearsville Township merged into Cubsville Township also including parts of Chicago Ridge. The last land annexation took place in 1936 when Parkersburg Township was added to Cubsville Township

Chicago Ridge is one of the most important mountain ranges in Illinois. It rises to a height of 4,500 feet (1,200 meters) and runs along the eastern border of the state. The ridge is made up of several mountains including Chicago Peak and Chicago Hill. The name comes from an Indian word meaning “high place” or “mountain peak.” The Chicago Ridge Range was first explored by Europeans in 1679 when Jesuit Father José de Arana charted it on his trip through the area. In 1812, United States troops arrived in what is now Illinois and began exploring the area for land grants. Five years later, General James K. Polk founded Fort Dearborn on Chicago Ridge to guard US interests in what is now Michigan Territory. The range played a key role during the American Civil War because it provided strategic footholds for Union troops as they fought their way northward. On April 6, 1865, Union forces attacked Confederate forces at Battle of Antietam near Philadelphia Heights; the attack resulted in about 150 casualties for Union forces and about 600 Confederate losses. After that battle, members of both armies constructed fortifications on various parts of Chicago Ridge; these defenses helped protect against future Confederate attacks until after the war ended. Today, much of the range remains untouched by humans, providing a beautiful backdrop to all sorts of activities such as hiking, skiing, rock climbing, bird watching and camping – all without any danger from natural disasters such as earthquakes or landslides!
