Chicago Ridge is a small town in central Illinois, United States. The population was 7,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Optical products have been made in Chicago Ridge for over 100 years and there are still many businesses that sell optical products from this period. The first factory in Chicago Ridge was started by two brothers, Samuel and John Randell, in 1874. They were members of the American Clock Company, which manufactured timepieces and other items using advanced metal-working techniques then new to America. The Randells produced watches and clocks from their business until around 1910 when they moved to a larger factory on South State Street near present-day Michigan Avenue in order to take advantage of advances in production methods. In 1916, Alfred Rundle founded the company that would become known as Rundle & Sons Trading Company Ltd., manufacturing watches, clocks and other optical products including sunglasses and contact lenses along with other sundries such as plumbing supplies and toys. By 1925, Rundle & Sons had outgrown its original facility on South State Street so they relocated their operations to what is now the basement of 111 West Irving Park Road (now an apartment building). There they continued making watchmaking equipment before moving into sunglasses and spectacles production in 1936 which became their mainstay product line until 1986 when they bought out rival Lederle Glass Works Incorporated. In 1987 both companies merged into one under the name Lederle/Rundle Corporation, continuing to produce various types of optical products until 1997 when finally ceasing operations due to economic reasons. Today there are several remaining factories producing optical accessories such as sunglasses, contact lenses and Halloween costumes among others; however much of these activity takes place online or through mail order rather than at physical stores like those operated by Samuel Randell et al back in 1874-1886.

Chicago Ridge is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,874 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the Chicago River and forms part of the city of Chicago. The community was founded in 1892 by pioneer farmers John and Mary Price. They named their new village after Boston's Ridge Hill neighborhood in which they had lived for many years before moving to Kane County from Massachusetts. The Price family operated a mill here until 1903 when they sold it to George Wernick who turned it into a flour mill. The mill closed in the 1920s but reopened in 1944 as a paper mills subsidiary of Upson Paper Company. In 1984, the company merged with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Corporation, becoming Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company Incorporated (HMPC). Since 1984, Chicago Ridge has been home to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's largest bookstore and online presence within North America; together they serve more than 350 million customer visits each year. In addition to its bookstore holdings, HMPC also operates two other large bookstores: one on State Street and one at Roosevelt Road and Hubbard Avenue in Midtown Chicago.

Chicago Ridge is a small, unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois, United States. It lies on the border of Kane and Cook Counties. The community has a population of about 620 people as of the 2010 census. The first settlers to Chicago Ridge were farmers who came from the town of New Salem in Kendall County, Ohio in the mid-19th century. They began to plant corn and other crops on their land and built homes around 1868. The name Chicago Ridge was given to the community because it was located near a ridge that divided both Kane and Cook Counties into two parts. In 1907, Chicago Ridge became an incorporated municipality with a total population of 458 people. It was one of five townships within Kane County that were created during the original organization of the county after 1876. The others were Albion, Hinsdale, Mayfield Heights, and Winnetka. With its new government structure, Chicago Ridge began to develop more vigorously than any other township within Kane County. Many businesses were established here including a grocery store and several churches which continue to serve today. In 1916, Chicago Ridge voters passed an ordinance granting them city status which allowed for more education and economic development opportunities for their residents. During World War II, many businesses closed due to wartime shortages but Chicago Ridge did not suffer as much as other communities in Kane County due to its close proximity to military bases such as Fort Sheridan (site of later McCormick Place) and Goodyear Air Force Base (home of nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base). After the war ended in 1945, many businesses reopened but few changed hands because there was little demand for products produced byependents during peacetime when most jobs had been replaced by technology or automation
