The first people to live on what is now Chicago Ridge were fur traders and their families who camped out along the western bank of the Des Plaines River in 1795. The first permanent settler was Nicholas Beattie who built a log cabin on the ridge in 1810. By 1815 there were about 30 settlers living on Chicago Ridge. In 1818 John Pickerell moved his family from Indiana to this area and built a small cabin north of present day Hearst Road. In 1827 Wm. Hickey bought land east of current day Cook Road and started building corrals for his cows near where he lives today known as Chicagoland Park. This area became part of downtown Chicago when it was annexed into the city in 1857. In 1870 Josephine Cook married Samuel Drexel and began raising chickens on her property which is now called North Side Park; she also ran a bakery there for many years before moving to her current home near Trump Tower in 1893). In 1886 John McNair and his brother James purchased 5 acres (2 km²) south of present day Hearst Road from Mrs Eleanor Pedersen Snider and began farming corn, beans, potatoes, cabbage seedlings etc.; they also raised hogs and other livestock until 1890 when they sold all their land except one acre (0.30 km²) east of Cook Road to Cornelius Vanderbilt IV for $1 million dollars ($100 million at modern prices). Many businesses closed down due to lack of war production materials; such as dairies unable to produce milk because there was no food available local or imported The post-war period saw various changes taking place within Kane County including: annexation by Cook Township in 1955; suburban growth around downtown which affected much of what is now Chicago Ridge; gradual loss of farmland following rationalization schemes throughout Kane County resulting in an overall decrease in population size (); closure or abandonment by businesses or individuals associated with surrounding industries during economic hard times culminating with a rapid increase in crime rates (). With few exceptions most residents have lived peacefully through these transitions without any major impacts however there are some unique aspects that affect everyone involved – mostly located along ancient Native American trails running through undeveloped portions of Kane County
