Chicago Ridge is a long, straight mountain range that stretches from the state of Illinois to Indiana. The ridge forms an important part of the eastern border of Lake Michigan and is one of the most heavily populated areas in the United States. Chicago Ridge was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. The area now known as Chicago Ridge was first occupied by the Potawatomi people. After being driven out of their ancestral land, the Potawatomi moved to what is now northwest Indiana. In 1818, General David Dixon purchase 2,500 acres of land at Chicago Ridge for $600. Dixon named his new settlement after General Andrew Jackson, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and won fame as a general during that conflict. In 1825, President James K. Polk signed a bill creating Griggs County, Indiana which included part of what is now Chicago Ridge. The name Griggs County was chosen because it represented Land Grant money given to African Americans by President Polk in order to help them develop their lands in north central Indiana. By 1828, about 100 black families lived onChicago Ridge with about 30 farms and estates grazing over 1 million head of livestock including horses, cows, pigs and chickens). By 1830, only 10%of all blacks living in north central Indiana were living within Griggs County; but this number increased rapidly when work opportunities opened up along railroad lines connecting Indianapolis with various parts of America through Griggs County. The arrival of railroads throughout much northern India allowed farmers to bring large quantities of goods and labor southward into North America where wages were much higher than back home on Indian soil (Fritsch 1984). This process led to several waves of African Americans arriving in northernIndiana during this period: First came free men such as John Cephus Cooke who arrived between 1849 and 1850; then followed enslaved women like Fannie Lou Hamer who arrived between 1861 and 1865 (Wright 2002). Because these workers brought slaves with them when they moved southward into newly created states such as Minnesota or Wisconsin following American Civil War establishement there were often strong reactions from white residents against these groups regardlessof whether or not they had any direct connectionto slavery (Boldt 1994). One example illustratingthis point are reports from 1870 indicating that whites have killed more black soldiers than black civilians due to fear that they would take away jobs from whites (Haney 1978). However even after many years since abolition efforts began numerous mixed-race children still continue to be bornin Illinois due primarilyto povertyand lackofaccessTo quality health care (Kincaid 1990)
