Chicago Heights is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,783 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago-Naperville-Edison Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Chicago Heights was founded in 1892 on land donated by John H. Bemis and his wife Annabelle Hines. The original businesses in the village were a grocery store, bakery, and distillery. In 1916, General Motors opened its first dealership in Chicago Heights and has continued to sell cars there ever since. In 1927, the Village of Chicago Heights voted to annex what was then known as “the Borough of Evanston” which bordered it to the south and west. The annexation created an area that included most of what is now downtown Chicago Heights as well as parts of today’s Ridgewood Park and North Side neighborhoods. In 1941, during World War II, the US government awardedGM a contract to build barracks for military personnel stationed within the city limits of Chicago Heights on lands now occupied by Northwestern University's McCormick Place campus. GM built more than 1,000 buildings for soldiers occupying central Illinois until 1945 including one building that remains standing today – Cadillac Place – which housed 2 officers' quarters (one belonging to General Motors itself) along with 16 enlisted men's barracks used for housing unit commanders and their staffs while they prepared for amphibious assaults against Okinawa Island Japan or Plan Gibraltar (Operation Overlord).
