Chicago Heights is a census-designated place in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 397 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Chicago Heights" comes from the local name for a high bluff in that area: High Park. The community was first settled by Germans in 1871 and named Chicago Heights after the government's Map of Illinois map showing what would become Dearborn County. The name change came about because some residents objected to being called "High Park". The first post office in Chicago Heights opened on July 1, 1873, and was known as Chicago Parkland until it changed its name to Chicago Heights on October 15, 1896. In 1907, the village of Cicero merged with Chicago Heights and became one municipality. On February 12, 1951, the village of Cicero merged with Dearborn Township to form City of Chicago Heights. According to 2000 U.S. Census data, there are 396 households out of which 36% have children under the age of 18 living with them; 54% are married couples living together; 8% have a female householder with no husband present; and 32% are non-families. Of all households, 37% are made up of individuals and 10% have someone living alone who is 65 years old or older
