The first people to live in what is now Chicago Heights were the Potawatomi Indians. Theysettled there around 1800 and named it after their home village in Ontario, Canada. The first white people to live in Chicago Heights were the Griggs family who arrived from New York City in 1847. They built a cabin on the edge of town and started trading with Indians. In 1853 they moved to a larger cabin and started a flour mill which became one of the largest flour mills in Illinois. The Griggs family also raised chickens, pigs and cows for milk and cheese. In 1870 John Davenport bought land near present-day 79th Street and Michigan Avenue for $1,000 from Jabez Polk Sr., one of the founders of Wilmette, Illinois. He built a large brick house on this property which he called "Davenport Manor." Over time many other families joined him in this development including those from Parma (now Arlington), Niles (now Northbrook), Crystal Lake (now Streamwood) and Lyons (now Wheaton). By 1900 Chicago Heights had over 300 residents. The First World War brought much change to Chicago Heights as soldiers made their way back home from combat overseas. Mrgriggs' grocery store closed due to high prices demanded by war-time consumers while his son Harry ran an ammunition store on State Street that supplied General Patton's forces with ammo during World War II . Many businesses closed during Prohibition but John Davenport kept his grocery store open until he died at 91 years old in 1957 . After John's death some members of his family sold most or all of their holdings followed by several others until it was purchased by Burt Rutan who operated it as an airplane parts dealership until its sale to Steve Kirby late last year A new school was opened in 1922 known as Northwestern School No 2 (). This school served students up through junior high school althoughgrades 7-12 were offered instruction starting with grade 9 beginning each year following annexation into Cook County proper; grades 1-7 being offered at various homes across town through public schools.} From 1925 until 1969 Northwestern School No 2 operated jointly with Park Ridge High School serving grades 7-12 together; later grades 1-7 were offered at various homes across town through public schools} Cook County annexed Urban Districts 3 & 4 effective January 1st1969 makingChicago Heights part of CookCounty proper } Today nearly every household within minutes walking distance has access to good quality air conditioning or running water thanks not just to city mandates but also Race Foundation funded infrastructure initiatives such as Centennial Aquifer recharge project completed last fall;}
