The first guns in Chicago Heights were pistols. The first unit to be called the "Chicago Heights Rifle Company" was organized on November 15, 1857. It was made up of men from the town of Chicago Heights and from West Side neighborhoods such as Englewood and Humboldt Park. The company served with distinction during the American Civil War, fighting for the Union side against Confederate troops. After the war, most of the original members of the company migrated to other towns in Illinois or Wisconsin. However, a few men from Chicago Heights stayed behind to form what is now known as "The First Chicago Heights Rifles". This group continued serving through World War I and into World War II. In 1945, they were disbanded due to budget cuts by the military.
Chicago Heights is a neighborhood in the city of Chicago, Illinois. The population was 11,745 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by the Northwest Side on the north, West Side on the east, and South Side on the south. The neighborhood was founded in 1877 as a working-class Irish community. The original name for Chicago Heights was Mount Prospect. This name may have been derived from nearby Mount Prospect Park which overlooks Lake Michigan and had been called "Mount Prospect" since 1785 when George Washington dedicated it to his wife's family after they moved from Ireland. In 1875, real estate developer Nicholas Myatt purchased an tract of land adjoining Mount Prospect Park and renamed it Chicago Heights in honor of his friend John Daley who owned much of northwest side of Chicago at that time. Myatt's contributions to American society include being one of the first developers to build in downtown Chicago (1895), sponsoring baseball's pioneer season (1900), and donating $10,000 towards construction of what would become Navy Pier (1905). He also donated land for City Hall which became home to then Mayor Richard M. Daley's administration in 1933 before moving into McCormick Place where he currently resides today with his wife Yvette Nofziger Daley According to 1990 census data only 7% of households were owner occupied while 93% were rented or shared with others within their family according to household size distribution; however this percentage has increased over time as more people have started renting instead of owning homes . By 2000 there were 10% owner-occupied homes while 90% rented or shared ownership with others within their household size distribution ; however this number continues to rise . Between 2006 and 2010 there was an increase in homeownership rate from 6%. 9 out 10 homes now are renters rather than owners but most rentals still fall into this category
