The first post office was established in 1839 at what is now Second Street and Worth Avenue. In 1845, Charles Dearborn organized the town of Dearborn Grove west of Chicago on land he had purchased east of present-day First Street and Worth Avenue near where present-day Third Street meets Wabash Avenue. George Washington Carver also founded Carverville east of Dearborn Grove on land he had acquired west of Loop Road (now Harrison Boulevard). The original townsite designation for Dearborn Grove was "Carverville." After CarVERVILLE was discontinued as an independent town status in 1902 because it lay within Henderson Township (later Cook County),Dearborn Grove reverted back to its original name: Chicago Heights.
