Chicago Heights was an incorporated town in Kane County, Illinois, United States, that was located on the south side of Chicago. The population was 1,611 at the 2000 census. The first settlers in what is now Chicago Heights were farmers who arrived from New England in 1833. They cleared land near present-day Fullerton Avenue and Wabash Street and built cabins for themselves and their families. By 1840, however, most of these immigrants had returned home because of economic hardship caused bythe Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1853, John P. Fuller bought 640 acres (250 ha) of forested land along Milwaukee Road north ofpresent-day Chicago Heights from Abram Sells for $1 million dollars. This purchase created full control over Chicago Heightsand authorized Fuller to name it as his own independent town rather than submit to annexation by other towns within Kane County. In 1857, Revolving Door Brewing Company opened its doors in what is now Fullerton Avenue South on what was then part of Chicago Heights property owned by Fuller's company. That year saw significant growth around this brewery as people began commuting into downtown Chicago for work or pleasure; thusFullerton Avenue became known as "The Drive" or "The Loop." In 1860, when Fuller died without heirs apparent and his lands were divided among his children according to intestacy law*, Fuller's widow Mary organized a referendum asking residents whether they wantedChicago Heights annexed into nearby Skokie*.* A majority voted no; henceforth Skokie would have sovereignty over all but a small portion of formerly full-time Chicago Heights residents.* *fuller family foundation included real estate holdings totaling more than 690 acres (300 ha) adjacentto original village site
The Chicago Heights neighborhood on the Northwest Side of Chicago was first settled in the early 1800s. The area now includes a number of buildings from that time, including the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum.
