In 1949, following school unification across all CPS public schools system as well as consolidating several different housing developments into one large complex called “The Village” on Wabash Avenue near State Street, much of what is now known as Chicago Heights was annexed by City Hall itself creating a new inner-city neighborhood with its own government services and infrastructure Since then various gentrification efforts have taken place with mixed success; however most residents continue to identify themselves primarily as Black or Latino Americana
