During World War I (1914-1918), Chicago Heights became home to Camp John Hay – an American military training camp that operated from 1917 until 1919 near present day Lockport Road and Pulaski Road – one of several camps established by American forces during World War I across GreaterChicago Area. This large-scale mobilization led to increased production at nearby breweries and helped fuel growth in nearby suburbs such as Wheaton and Riverview while also supporting local enlistments throughout wartime Illinois’s largest city effort; however, no residential development took place due to high demand for landfill space at then-new Soldier Field Stadiumgrounds which were quickly filled with troops returning from Europe after hostilities ended there six years earlier (and still are today). After 1918 many residents moved out or were laid off from their jobs during post-war economic restructuring brought about by nationally created unemployment rates well above average even for early 21st century America†† Michigan native Julius Rosenwald purchased 1/2 acre on Pulaski Road east of Lockport Road in 1922 for $5 per acre (the equivalent value today) which he called “The Oaks” and developed into what remains one of Chicagoland's earliest planned community developments††Today‡‡ Over 80% of all homes built here since 1922 have been owner-occupied*, indicating that renters historically constituted just 8% or so*of total housing units As early as 1921 Rosenwald had envisioned creating “a series[es]…of beautiful row houses arrayed facing each other along… wide streets leading away from The Oaks downstate where lawns would be watered daily [and] children would play out front between parenthesis], similar not only to broad avenues we see today but also elements found worldwide among our best example: Regency mansions†† Today these streets intersect Hubbard Drive
