Chatham is a small town in Chatham County, Illinois, United States. The population was 515 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Quincy, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was first settled in 1854 by Quakers from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1857, the original post office was established and remained in operation until 1907. The village of Chatham was organized on April 1, 1908, and remained so until its incorporation into the Village of Quincy on November 3rd of that year. Chatham had a population of 363 as of the 2000 census The town has experienced Changed fortunes over time with an increase in manufacturing activities coming to town during the early 1960s followed by a hiatus during which there were many negative impacts on both business and personal lives brought about by technological advances such as television and jet travel. Chatham was a small town in Stephenson County, Illinois, United States. It is located on the north bank of the Chatham River, about 9 miles (14 km) east of the village of Chatham and 10 miles (16 km) west of the town of Cairo. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. The first land grant in Stephenson County was to John Pemberton in 1800. In 1807, James Knopp moved from Connecticut to Stephenson County and took up a claim on what is now known as East Second Street. He named his location "Chatham," after his birthplace, Chatham Township in New York. The original settlers were primarily farmers who grew corn and other vegetables for their households and sold their produce at local farm stores or directly to customers in town. By 1834, there were only 20 residents living in Chatham; by 1860, it had fallen to just 6 people. In 1851-1852, George Hinton built a mill on the Chatham River that became one of Stephenson County's most important commercial institutions. At its peak production capacity (twice that of any other mill then operating), Hinton's Mill produced flour, rice meal, bacon fat, cheesecloth and other fabric products such as hats and coats; it also manufactured nails and door hinges. After years of decline during the Civil War period due to competition from more efficient mills elsewhere in Indiana and Ohio, Hinton's Mill reopened by 1865 under new management but closed again by 1874 because of lack of demand for agricultural goods brought about by technological advances among farmers throughout America.. In 1875-1876 an effort was made to revive Chatham when citizens formed a Committee to Restore Our Old Village which purchased 160 acres (61 hectares) along present day East Second Street between Cook Road and Ives Road for $1 million dollars (). This purchase marked perhaps the most significant event leading up to chivalric group activity surrounding what would become known as Knight's Ridge State Park today.. In 1902-1903 an addition was made to the mill complex with two large boilers used forinding coal(). Coal mining ceased operations at Hinton's Mill around this time due to factors such as depletion of coal seams within Stephenson County limits caused by overgrazing activities following World War I &&&&&&&&&
