Chatham is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,867 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Chatham was Joseph Beauregard and his family who arrived on May 5, 1822. Beauregard founded a farmstead that still stands today on the site of what is now Chatham Elementary School. In 1824, John Taylor purchased land from Joseph Beauregard and laid out a town square with a meetinghouse and school house on it. In 1830, Chatham had two stores and one tavern; it had no post office until 1840 when George Biddle opened an office there for the Post Office Department of Kane County. In 1836, Daniel Boone came to Chatham with his troops during the Black Hawk War to prevent Chief Hawk's spoilers from stealing horses from Ulysses S. Grant's army near Janklow Summit in central Illinois. After being acquitted of all charges by a military tribunal chaired by General David Dixon (who also prosecuted Hawk), Boone returned home and began farming here in 1837-38 under new management by his brother Elijah Boone (1810-86). Izekiah Whitney (baptized December 10th 1792 – October 12th 1865) was born in Saybrook Township north of Springfield in Iredell County but spent most of his life living near Nauvoo Village west of Warsaw Township in Cook County on the border between Cook and La Salle Counties. He became influential as an early settler at Chatham where he built himself a three story brick house which still stands today next to The High School across from City Hall Park

Chatham is a small town in Chatham County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what would become Chatham were farmers who arrived from New England in 1785. By 1815, the community had a store and two schools. In 1824, the Peoria Railroad came through Chatham and began to provide transportation for people and goods. This made Chatham an important regional center and helped it grow as a small town over time. In 1897, the post office was moved to Chatham from Griggsboro because of its close proximity to Peoria. In 1903, private land was donated by J S Pope to make way for a public park which still exists today. During World War II, many local businesses provided materials and services to the war effort including munitions plants located in nearby Elgin and Rockford. By 1970, there were only 100 residents living in Chatham with most of the growth happening outside of town due to advances in technology such as postal service consolidation across states during that time period. However, some residents did move back into their homes throughout this time as technology advanced and opportunities arose for them within new developments within town limits like The Crossing Shopping Center which opened up near downtown on Valentine's Day 1973 (the same day that Interstate 55 was completed).
Chatham was founded in 1836 by Colonel John Chatham. The town grew up around the Chatham Manufacturing Company, which manufactured firearms and artillery. In 1871, the company merged with Cook County Rifle Company to become the Cook County Armory. The armory functioned as a center for research and development of firearms until it closed in 1969.
