Chatham, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois on the north side of the Chicago River. The population was 8,382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first scopes were built in Chatham by John Smeaton in 1841. A few years later, he donated land to be used for a school and Observatory. In 1847, Amos Fenton set up his observatory here and began making use of his new telescope which he had designed and built himself. He also donated some equipment to the Chatham Observatory which became known as "Fenton's Factory." In 1853, Edwin Hubble founded what is now called JPL in Pasadena, California after donating money to establish it as an astronomical research center funded by Congress. The first Astro-Telescope Laboratory was established here at JPL in 1924 with help from Wernher von Braun and other space scientists who had worked on building rockets like Saturn V during World War II. The town of Chatham grew rapidly after this change and soon boasted several dozen businesses employing over 200 people providing goods and services related to astronomy including telescopes, microscopes, astronomical charts/graphs/diagrams/photographs etc., many of which still operate today! Many famous astronomers have made their home or offices here (e.g., Edwin Hubble), including James Clerk Maxwell (the physicist who developed equations that govern light waves), Fritz Zwicky (the astronomer who discovered Pluto), Carl Sagan (the popular science writer) and even Neil Armstrong (!); all are represented on one street corner or another!

They built log cabins along what is now State Highway 1, which led to their name –meaning "place where logs are stacked." This early pioneer community was first settled by Germans, but soon afterward Englishmen arrived as well. The Dutch also had some involvement in early Chatham activity because they owned land adjacent to the town. A post office was established at Chatham in 1828, and gradually grew into a full-fledged village until it merged with Bloomington in 1853 when Bloomington became an incorporated city. In that year, George Weninger opened a gristmill here that helped make Chatham one of the most important flour mills in northwestern Illinois. By 1860, there were twenty-four businesses operating in Chatham; four of these were grocery stores and twelve belonged to Mr. Weninger himself! In 1865, Mr. Weninger donated land for a public square which would serve as a center for commerce and education in Chatham Village; this square still stands today and has been called "the heart of downtown." In 1870-71, construction began on what would become known as "Mr.'s House," one of America's earliest two high school buildings (the other being Columbian College). At that time only white boys could attend these schools; black students eventually received their own high schools within Chicagoland following City Council approval in 1944! The 20th century saw many changes take place around Chatham Village including population growth (to 611 by 1910), steady diversification of businesses due to new industry entrants (poultry processing through 1970), suburban real estate development (throughout much of Kendall County), general economic decline beginning after World War II followed by increased use of air travel throughout much of northern Illinois (leading to more job opportunities outside urban areas) culminating with revitalization efforts following passage of laws encouraging suburban growth starting around 1990 sparked by increasing concerns about crime rates within cities

The first store was built on Main Street in 1840 by Abram Dixon. A post office was established here with the name of "Chatham" on October 12, 1841; it was changed to "Chatman" on July 1, 1851. By 1860, there were over 20 businesses in Chatham with a population of over 100 people. Overnight growth had taken place which resulted in many homes being built without permits or zoning laws until later that decade when ordinances were passed authorizing single-family dwellings only within certain boundaries set by village trustees who scattered around town limits to give maximum development potential to their citizens while also protecting its rural character through restrictions on commercial activity outside those boundaries
