On July 4, 1861, Union General John A. McClernand attacked Confederate General Robert E. Lee's forces at Gettysburg and drove them back into Maryland before striking north to Chesterfield County for supplies and reinforcements. After weeks of fighting which resulted in over 100 deaths (of which 60% were Confederate), McClernand discovered that his supply lines had been bypassed by the Confederacy and ordered his army to march southward instead of eastward as planned. As a result of this strategic reversal of fortune, Confederate General Robert E. Lee managed to escape capture with heavy losses while Union General John A. McClernand suffered only minor casualties during the Battle of Gettysburg. In 1865 Chatham became the scene of one of the most significant events in local history when Abraham Lincoln issued an Executive Order abolishing slavery within ten miles of any city or town in the United States without express written consent from residents; this order effectively ended African American slavery within Clay County for all practical purposes as well as throughout much of America due to its proximity to Chicago (which had become a free state). Chatham remained an agricultural community until after World War II when it transitioned into a manufacturing center with major contributions coming from textiles (including cotton) and plastics products such as auto parts and tires

Chatham, Illinois is a town in Decatur County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Chatham was founded in 1849 by Joshua and Nancy Berry. It was named after the ancient English city of Canterbury. In 1865, Chatham became a county seat of Decatur County. In 1875, it became a village and in 1901 it became a town. The first settler to arrive in what is now Chatham were two brothers: Joshua and Wm. Berry (1802-1893). They came overland from Kentucky with their families on April 12th, 1849. Their wagon train stopped at the old fort on the mouth of the White River which is now known as Camp Perry State Park east of downtown Chicago; they built a log cabin there and named it "Berry's Fort." The Berry family remained here for twenty years until they moved to Peoria where Wm. died young in 1893 A few years later Nancy married John Dickson who had also come overland from Kentucky but landed at Chicago about the time her brother did so and soon after he started farming near present day Randolph Street Cemetery - part of today's Village of Randolph just southwest of downtown Chicago It wasn't until 1896 when Chatham got its own post office that residents began to box up their mail inside their homes - this would be followed by an electric telephone line being installed across town in 1902 By 1905 there were 20 buildings in “the little village” with 1 storey each including 2 frame churches— First Presbyterian Church (now Christmastime Place) on North Main Street and Second Presbyterian Church (now First Lutheran) on West Monroe Street which are still standing today as well as 3 blacksmiths shops etcetera . Also one school building built then called Griggs Schoolhouse but demolished 1912
Chatham was founded in 1814 by Captain James Cook and his crew on the Illinois River. Cook named the settlement for his old home parish, Chatham in England. The first settler in Chatham was John Dickey, who arrived in 1815. By 1830, the town had a population of around 100 people. In 1834, Chatham became an independent school district. In 1839, General Scott's Expedition overran Missouri and entered Illinois through Chatham. The town's residents were caught up in the excitement of the event and soon after many of them moved to new settlements in central Illinois. After Scott's Expedition ended, most of the original settlers returned to live at Chatham or continue farming there until about 1860 when it again fell into decline due to heavy trading with surrounding villages and towns. In 1865, a fire destroyed most of the buildings within Chatham and most of its inhabitants left for good except for a few small farmers who continued to reside there until about 1870 when it again declined due to heavy trade with surrounding villages and towns once more.
