Chatham was founded in 1814 by Captain John Chatham as a trading post on the Illinois River. In 1823, the town became a county seat, and in 1827 it joined the newly formed Illinois Territory. The town is located at (41.848992, -87.214836). It lies east of Dixon on the north bank of the river, west of Mount Prospect on the south bank, and northeast of Champaign on an upland plateau overlooking both rivers. The buildings that survive from early Chatham are scattered across triangular blocks bounded by Main Street (northwest), Water Street (southwest), Fourth Street (southeast) and Wabash Avenue (south). In 1830-31 chiseled stone markers were erected at various points in the town including Market Square (now Pershing Square), Presbyterian Church, United States Bank Building and School House; these remain standing today but have been largely destroyed over time by weathering and other natural causes. Chatham was first settled mainly by farmers who plowed their land into corn or beans/wheat fields; later they built barns and outbuildings such as stores and clinics. By 1870 only a few small businesses remained in operation: one store operated as a general store for several years before being closed down due to competition from larger stores; another small business supplied groceries until it too closed down; two blacksmiths provided services until this period also when their shops were taken over by local white merchants; one boatbuilder built several boats during this time frame before moving his shop to Moline; and finally a carpenter briefly operated his shop before moving it toNormal Heights near Grayslake soon thereafter where he continued building cars until his death in 1951.
