Chatham is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,896 at the 2010 census. Chatham is located on the east bank of the Kankakee River, about southeast of Chicago. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Chatham was organized as a village in 1847 and became a city in 1903. The population of Chatham peaked at 11,000 in 1920, but has since decreased to just over 1,500 residents. In terms of economic activity, it is primarily considered a bedroom community forChicagoans who work in nearby neighborhoods such as Kenwood or West Englewood. The town's name comes from Captain John Chatham and his men who fought against General Anthony Wayne during the American Revolution. The surrounding countryside was also home to many pioneer families who built homes and farms thereabouts during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many of these settlers are buried near Chatham's Town Hall Square today. The first settler to come to what would become Chatham arrived on November 10, 1847 when two German immigrants named Wilhelm Hofer and Johann Wirth set out from Hamburg with four oxen (towing their farm wagonloads of goods plus all their clothes) for what would be their new home on a tract given them by Simon Morrill in what is now Little Rock Township (now Park Ridge). They built a cabin about one mile west of present-day downtown Chatham on land that had been donated by Colonel George Armstrong Custer’s widow Livonia Custer Grant—the daughter of General Ulysses S. Grant’s maternal uncle! There were only twelve people living here when they started out: three men (Hofer, Wirth &Morrill), five women (orphan Catherine Preuschow), five children (Henry Preuschow; Anna Morrill; Jacob Preuschow; Lizzie Morrill; Emma Preuschow), and one slave girl owned by Captain John Winthrop Chiasson! Most everyone else either worked or raised livestock on their holdings until 1853 when Frieda Davenport came overland from Michigan with her husband Charley Davenport to purchase some land adjacent to hers northeast of town site which she then turned into an agricultural township! By 1857 there were forty-seven residents living here! Of this number twenty-six lived within two miles of main square while ten resided more than six miles away.. . . chathams original growth came slowly due largely to lackof available water power for mills which did not exist until after railroads arrived through this area ca 1870."
