Chatham, Illinois is one of the few places in the United States that has a history of handguns being banned. The city was first known for its military fortifications, and defense against Native American raids. In 1838, the state of Illinois created a law banning handguns, and Chatham quickly became one of the cities to enforce this ban. The ordinance declared all firearms to be “possessory” and defined them as any weapon capable of inflicting death or serious bodily harm on another person. It also outlawed any type of ammunition that could be used with a handgun. This law was effective for over fifty years, until it was repealed in 1934.
Chatham is a small town in western Illinois. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is located in DuPage County. Chatham is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Chatham community began as a log cabin settlement on the banks of the Des Plaines River in 1836, when Federalist and Whig politicians from nearby Aurora were seeking to create a political center between their two townships. By 1840, Chatham had grown to include 19 log-and-stone buildings and an orchard/grains market. A school was built in 1846 and used until 1957; it now serves as a museum. The first post office opened in 1848, and the first store was opened in 1850. In 1860, John Davenport organized what would become DuPage County with portions of Kane and Cook counties; Chatham became one of its original townships within that county. In 1870, Chatham voters passed an ordinance declaring themselves "a Socialist Republic" after reading about socialism from James Kettner's newspaper article "Chatham: Its Origin and Progress." On November 3, 1896 – moments before voting began for president election on Tuesday – one resident shot another in self-defense following an altercation at a party celebrating his brother's mayoral victory over incumbent George Hynes; both men were injured but survived. That year saw significant transformation for Chatham as well: socialist theories gained currency among residents (the term "chathamism" entered the local lexicon), while businesses such as grocery stores proliferated around Main Street (later renamed Park Avenue). During World War II, many people working inside or near Du Page County government relocated to chathansthan during this time period due to wartime shortages elsewhere within Illinois. After the war ended, many people returned home but some continued living there through various forms of housing discrimination including redlining by Illinois state officials based on race throughout most of postwar America - continuing into the 21st century up until current times when chathansthan has reclaimed much of its former diversity despite efforts by some board members to gentrify it further

The town of Chatham, Illinois, was founded in 1834 by John H. Chatham and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after the British naval officer who helped found it, Commodore George Vancouver. The first settler in Chatham was John Fenton. By 1840, there were twenty-one residents living in Chatham. In 1844, a post office was established in the town and the population grew to thirty-six residents. In 1847, a school was built and the community continued to grow until it had a total population of ninety-two people by 1850. During this time, Chatham became an important center for trade due to its location at the mouth of the Kankakee River. In 1854, the first railway arrived in Chatham and it quickly became an important trade center with its many businesses selling goods from local farmers and merchants. By 1860, there were over fifty businesses operating in Chatham with a population of one thousand five hundred people. In 1865, when Union troops began their march through central Illinois during the American Civil War, most of the business owners closed their doors because they could not support war efforts without revenue. However, some began to reopen after Union troops withdrew from central Illinois and started their retreat back eastward across the river into Missouri. This allowed for more trade opportunities for those located in nearby towns such as Crystal City (now part of Springfield) which reestablished itself as an important commercial center during this time period thanks to its proximity to both Chicago and St Louis
