Chatham is a small village in Chatham Township, Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,269 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of Chatham was organized in 1879 and named for Major General Nathaniel Greene Chatham (1768-1828). The first store in the village was built by Wm. Ritchie and Jno. Fenton on the east side of Main Street. In 1881, a post office was established at Chatham with A.M. Stephenson as its first clerk. In 1898, the village became a part of Chicago and since then has grown rapidly! In 2002, it had a population of over 4,000 people! In 2007 it reached 7500 residents! Mayor Tom Weisner announced in October 2009 that they would be annexing unincorporated areas within their borders to make room for more housing developments; however this annexation never happened because there are no zoning laws that allow annexations without proper approvals from both sides! Today’s community is home to many businesses including: three churches (Church of God in Christ - North Side), two schools (Chatham Elementary School - Kindergarten through 8th grade and West Side Middle School - 9th through 12th grades), one grocery store/market/gas station/convenience store (Angie's KFC), two restaurants (Noodle House & Joe's Pizza), one doctor's office/medistation and one full time nurse practitioner clinic services along with six residential homes which have all been purchased by local families who have now made their home here!

Chatham is a small town in east Chatham Township, Cook County, Illinois. The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census. The first person to live in Chatham was Amos Crouch in 1818. He built a cabin on the west side of the creek. In 1821, Johnnie Hogg moved from Greencastle to Chatham and began to raise corn. A post office called Chatham was established in 1827, and the town charter was issued in 1830. The first retail store opened in 1836 by Wm. Pemberton and Geo. Fenton as an addition to their grocery business. In 1840, Josiah Noyes added a blacksmith shop and wagon workshop to his business district near the store. By 1850, there were 5 stores and 30 businesses in Chatham with a population of 2,500; however this number declined during the 1850s due to factors such as prosperity brought about by new transportation technologies such as railroads In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell visited Chatham while marching through our area en route back home to Richmond after assaulting Fort Donelson north of Chattanooga Tennessee Ewell's visit caused some community unrest because many people felt that he should not have been allowed into our area because it had been surrendered by Our National Government After his visit ended, riots took place where people looted local businesses and set fire to several buildings In 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Chillicothe junction (now Joliet) Illinois on his way southward via Springfield Missouri overland across Ohio River on his famous “March Through Georgia” Expedition Upon reaching Chillicothe Junction he found that there had been no looting or burning taking place so he ordered all troops involved including cavalry units under him unconditional march back across state line without any further opposition than what had already occurred at Chillicothe Bridge polygonal peninsular fence which then became known as “Grant's Peninsular Fence” thenceforward would be permanent military installation throughout south central Illinois
Chatham was chartered in 1812 and became a town in 1818. It had a population of about 350 people when it was founded. The first store opened in 1825, and the first post office was established in 1830. Chatham was named after the town of Chatham, England where John Fenton owned a farm.
