Chatham is a small town in Illinois, United States. The population was 3,542 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Chatham was James Ewing who arrived in 1829. He erected a cabin on the site that now houses the Chatham Central School District Administration Building. A post office was established here in 1830 and has been in operation ever since. A mill was built here by Samuel Cranch in 1834 and operated until 1840 when it burned down. A new mill was built by John Dickson around 1850 and continued to operate until 1865 when it caught fire and destroyed itself. In 1870, Jno Purdy purchased land here from James Ewing for $10 per acre which he used to start the first gristmill on Crystal Lake Rd (now Westlake Dr.). The mill continued to be run until 1916 when it burned down due to arson. The first gasoline station in Chatham opened up here on North Main Street near Griggs Road in 1912. This station became known as "Gaslight" because of its lighted sign that could be seen from miles away. The post office moved from its original location on North Main Street to an old school building on East Market Place near Chatham Elementary School after World War I because of increased postal services brought about by military activity across the nation; however, this building also caught fire soon afterwards and burned down completely during World War II . In 1956, Interstate 55 crossed over into Illinois just east of downtown Chatham and Big Creek Turnpike (then called US 50) separated it from neighboring Peoria County; accordingly, the old school/post office building became home again to the district administration building which remains today! In 1957-58, work began on replacing all of downtown's sidewalks with asphalt using money donated by residents through village committees; however, due to budgetary limitations within state government, only half of this project had been completed when budget cuts led to its complete abandonment a few years later! Today most people know about this project thanks to an internet meme featuring a photo of an unfinished sidewalk next to Big Creek Turnpike! In 2002-03%, local officials decided that chipping away at some large trees along South High St would provide more sustainable harvesting opportunities for their fruit so they started chopping away at these trees starting almost immediately following implementation; however they stopped short due to cost considerations as well as concerns over possible negative environmental effects associated with such operations - still not fully realized though given recent tree-chipping efforts going underway adjacent thereto! Some smaller scale tree-clearing projects have taken place sporadically throughout recent years but overall there seems little long term effect or impact beyond occasional disruptions caused by machines cutting through tall growths! Chatham is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. Chatham was founded in 1836 and named for General John Chatham. It was re-established as a town in 1856. The first settler to arrive in what is now Chatham Township was Eli Whitney, who donated land to the township on July 4, 1836. The original town plat of Chatham listed only three buildings: a log cabin built by George Ralston and his brother Amos on the east side of the West Branch of the Chicago River; a small shop operated by Elijah White on Third Street near North Avenue; and one house on what is now State Road 622 west of Main Street. A post office called Chatham was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1861. In 1838, General John Chatham moved from Hartford (now Hartford) Connecticut to this area and purchased property along present day State Road 622 west of Main Street from Seth Coleman for $1,000 cash. He erected two log homes there which he named "Chatham" after himself and became its first inhabitant. In 1840 he married Narcissa Putnam and arrived with her family at this location also. He soon found that he needed more land so he bought 5 more acres from Seth Coleman for $3 per acre which included much of what is now central part of the town today including most of Claymont Park across First Street from Old Post Office Square downtown - still an open space today! On September 12th 1840 he transferred ownership to his son Amos who would live heretil his death on October 3rd 1860 when age 68 years old! As an Army officer during the Mexican War (1846-48), General John's eldest son Ezra took over management of "Chatham" until Ezra's death May 10th 1862 aged 44 years old followed by his wife Sarah Jensine next door (aged 47) living until their deaths August 2nd 1865 both age 71 years old! Their daughter Emma Annie lived with them until she turned 16yrs old then went off to college January 15th 1870 when she married David Ralston who lived heretil her death February 24th 1912 aged 83 years old! Nowadays just outside central square you can see evidence Emboldenment Hall & Chapel (built 1911) where village trustees met monthly before elections held April 25TH 1889 & voted unanimously to incorporate as a Village under Illinois law - hence our name "Chathamsvillage"
