The shop’s owner, John Hinton, started selling handguns as well. By 1865, the shop had closed but its legacy lives on today thanks to John Hinton’s son-in-law Edwin Weems who reopened the business in 1903. Today, the Weems Gun Shop is one of the most popular shooting places in Chatham with customers coming from all over Illinois for their firearm needs. The first settler in Chatham was John Prentiss who arrived in 1812. A post office called Chatham was established in1827 and remained in operation until 1861. In 1830, Nathan Channing built a house on the present site of Chatham Elementary School. Channing's son-in-law Samuel Freeman opened a general store on North Main Street in 1836 which became known as "The General Store". In 1846, Daniel Denton bought land from Channing and started to build a sawmill on his property which became known as "Denton Mills". By 1860, there were three stores and seventy-six residents living in Chatham. In 1870, Jno Cramer sold lots for $1 each to buy shares of stock in the new Northwestern Pacific Railroad company which created an economic boom for the community. The first train reached Chatham from Kenilworth Avenue Station on October 10th 1870. By 1890, there were only six residents left and by 1920 only one store remained open with about sixty residents remaining within the town limits

On December 4th of that year, the Union Pacific Railroad reached Chatham from Palatine Junction with a trainload of iron ore; this made it one of the last towns to be built along trackage constructed by the railroad. Chatham experienced several economic declines during World War II but has since recovered as an agricultural community with a strong focus on corn farming and cattle business
