Chatham is located on the Chatham River, about 20 miles (32 km) south of the city of Chicago and 30 miles (48 km) north-east of St. Louis. The first settlers arrived in 1818, when John Butler and his party crossed the river to establish a trading post on the site that now includes Chatham. In 1825, George Washington Carver established a farm near present-day Chatham. By 1830, there were also several stores and residences in what is now Chatham. In 1831–32, President Andrew Johnson ordered Major General Philip Sheridan to try to bring peace and order to Cook County by suppressing local riots called "The Famine". Sheridan's forces burned many homes in Chihegan Prairie Township while arresting residents who had participated in or supported the riots Admiral David Dixon Porter described as "a bloodless massacre" In 1865–66 during The Great Chicago Fire }, Union troops attacked Vermilion Parish constabulary officer Captains Prentice and Hutton as they tried to put out an open flame at a slave cabin northeast of town (). Captain Prentice was fatally shot moments later by Confederate trooper Lt.(later Captain), James Dillard (), who then surrendered without combatant surrendering any property () A memorial commemoration for both officers has been placed at the nearby Vermilion Parish courthouse .

The first Europeans to visit Chatham were French traders who landed there in 1768 and named it after their hometown of La Halle-sur-Saône, France. In 1812, Chatham was organized as a village with a post office and two churches. The village had just 5 residents when Ulysses S. Grant visited it in 1827; he called it "a pretty little place". In 1840, Chatham became an incorporated town when all of its residents ratified a petition by James Moulton about creating an incorporated area for the town's merchants and others engaged in commercial pursuits. In 1865, Chatham was renamed for General George Armstrong Custer during the American Civil War (1865–1871). At that time, most Americans thought of Union soldiers as cowboys or Confederates as Yankees. But President Abraham Lincoln chose to name General Custer after General Midway whose forces had successfully destroyed Confederate armies at Bull Run on April 6th 1865 and helped turn the tide of the war against Confederate forces which eventually surrendered on April 9th 1865. So much so that General Custer's nickname became nationally known - "General Cardigan" during his military career because so many people mistakenly thought he was Irish instead of Native American - until quite recently! As early as 1910, reports indicated that some students from Carbondale were considering moving to Chatham so they could have closer schools and more opportunities for extracurricular activities like football and basketball teams; however no permanent move ever took place until 1922 when Revolver Jock Stroud arrived from Carbondale to open his grocery store at 716 Main Street which later evolved into what is now known as Jaxx's Grocery Store & Cafe located at 501 N Main Street today! The community exploded with growth beginning in the late 1920s due to World War II (1939–1945), specifically through industrial development such as aircraft manufacturing plants established by Naval Air Station Alameda ( NAS Alameda ) adjacent to town limits; this period also saw heavy rural whites migration eastward into Peoria County in search of jobs throughout much of Illinois due primarily to advances in transportation technology including aerial photography satellite imagery reconnaissance submarines aerial refueling tanker planes hydrogen fuel storage tanks giant bridges new subdivisions built outlying areas streets named after famous Americans etc., etc., leading gradually but surely towards incorporation into what would become Peoria Township on February 14th 1959 following approval by township voters via secret ballot!
