Chatham is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1836 by John Chatham and his brother-in-law Nathaniel Hall on a tract of land that now makes up much of the eastern edge of Springfield. In 1851, Chatham married Elizabeth Morse and they moved to what is now Fox Lake. They had six children: Anna (1852-1928), John (1855-1937), Nellie (1857-1945), Winthrop (1859-1939), Margaret (1861-1940) and James Witherspoon (1863-1960). In 1893, they erected a frame house on North Main Street which served as their home until 1922 when it was replaced by a more recent structure. In 1860s Chatham built an gristmill on South Main Street which still stands today. The mill ran for many years until it was taken over by the current owner in 1984 and closed down. In 1924 Chatham donated land to the City of Springfield for use as an open space park; this property includes most of what is now Chatham Elementary School and Middle School along with parts of South Main Street between Walnut Avenue and Elm Avenue. Today this park forms one side or corner of West State Street near where Interstate 44 crosses into Illinois from Missouri

In 1922 Wm Sargent began construction on what would become one of America's largest airfields - now known as Mid-American Airport - just outside town limits. This led to increased tourism and growth for Chatham, which reached its peak during World War II with an estimated 100 businesses providing goods and services to servicemen and their families living nearby. However, following World War II there were significant declines in industry until 2002 when Mid-American Airport reopened as an award-winning airport with world-class facilities catering to aviation professionals from around the globe Today however, much like many other communities across America+,Chatham has seen significant decline in both its economic activity and its status as a place where people can enjoy life's simple pleasures such as quality community events like arts festivals or concerts etc., while also seeing significant amounts traffic including military jets taking off/landing at Mid-American Airport which can often disruptive to locals who are trying spend their Saturday mornings without affecting traffic patterns
