Chatham is a town in Chatham County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Carbondale–Munster metropolitan area. The first known inhabitants of what is now Chatham were the Potawatomi. A post office called "Johnstown" was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1845. In 1837, James Fenton bought land at what is now Chatham and named it after himself. In 1860, Chatham became territory of Missouri; however, because its government did not represent that portion of the state, it retained its name as an independent town until November 3rd of that year when Missouri ceded all but a few parcels to Illinois. On July 10th 1861, Chatham became one of twelve townships in Carbondale Township form which Carbondale would become metropolitan area on December 15th elections by changing its boundaries from east-west to north-south lines due to annexations by other townships within Carbondale Township including Galesburg (now Peoria) and West Dundee (now Villa Park). On January 1st 1907 Chatham had a population of 2238 people; however this number only lasted for about two years as during World War II most industry closed down leaving little opportunity for residents to grow crops or form businesses so the population rapidly declined which lead to several fires that destroyed many homes over time. The last fire occurred on October 14th 1946 which caused extensive damage to property and resulted in $32500 damage bill with insurance claims totaling $140000 In 1949 when Carbondale annexed Galesburg making it into a city Limits increased the population size by 100%. However this increase was short lived as on July 1st 1951 Galesburg annexation made further changes such as adding six new square miles making it an unincorporated community and decreasing the size of Chatham for lack of business opportunities like agriculture or manufacturing This left much unused farmland with local residents appealing to state legislators for help getting Recognition from being part of city limits again which led to their revival efforts starting back up in 1957 with Representative George Butler who started organizing meetings between representatives from different parts of town trying get some kind Of representation from City Limits Although no decisions were ever made but public opinion changed after watching TV commercials for kennels operated by dog meat traders running around University Area near Campus

The first European settlers in what is now Chatham County were French Canadians who arrived in 1785. The town of Chatham was founded by Pierre-Charles de Lacoste and his brothers on a tract of land that they acquired from the Massacres Creek Indian tribe. The Lacoste brothers named their new town after themselves (Chatham being one of their first words). In 1814, when Illinois became a state, Chatham County was included within it. In 1827, the village of Chatham was incorporated as a city and remained so until 1892 when it became a suburb of Chicago. In 1910, Chatham became an official U.S. county seat with then-President William McKinley making it an official campaign stop during his unsuccessful run for re-election against Democrat John Fenton
