A barrel is a long, thin tube of metal or plastic used to transport powder, oil, and other gases from the muzzle of a firearms weapon to the combustion chamber at the breechface. The bombardier belt provides ignition by heating up the propellant gas as it fills the barrel. The use of barrels began with spears and arrows. Arrows were shot from bows which in turn were fired from cannons. A cannon was created by combining two guns that had been mounted on either side of a vertical spindle. A round ball was loaded into one half of the spindle while another round was Loaded into the other half; then this combination would be drawn back and let off, propelling the ball over a great distance!
The first gun barrels that were made in Chatham, Illinois date back to 1842. At that time, the town was known as “The Gunnery District” because of its many factories that manufactured firearms. The production of guns and cannons continued until the early 1800s, during which time Chatham became a major center for firearm manufacturing.
Chatham is a town in Chatham Township, Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,184 at the 2010 census. It is located south of Chicago on the west side of the Chicago River. The first European settlers in Chatham were Frenchmen and their families who arrived in 1795. A post office was established in 1802, and by 1825 the community had a store and two schools. A sawmill was built in 1827 and operated until 1850; it remains a part of the town today. In 1829–1830, George Stephenson built the first steamboat on what is now known as Jackson Boulevard between State Street and Ontario Avenue (now Wells Road). The boat transported goods from Rahway to Buffalo overills before being condemned for being too heavy for shallow water transport. In 1830–1831, John Davenport founded Davenport Manufacturing Company which manufactured cornices for churches and other buildings; it still operates as a small business today. In 1830–1831, Isaac Butt founded Butt & Co., an early express wagon firm that operated from Chatham Centre into the 1840s; it still operates as a small business today. In 1840–1841, Abraham Cornelius opened his grocery store at 404 Niles Avenue which became one of the largest groceries in Chicagoland until its closure in 1966. By 1850, there were only three stores remaining within Chatham Village: one by Isaac Butt (later renamed Butler), one by John Miller (later renamed Miller's) and one by Prentice Morrill (later renamed McCormick). In 1865–1866, Judge Samuel Tilden organized Chatham Township under Illinois state law following his election to serve on Anoka County's First District Court; he served until his death in 1868. During this time period there were also several amateur musical groups formed including "The Harmoniae" which performed at local schools from 1870 to 1880; "The Sacred Harp Singers" which performed at religious services from 1890 to 1915; "The American String Quartet" which played chamber music from 1916 to 1920; "The Blacksmiths' Union") which met monthly at The General Store from 1870 to 1880; "Sidebottom Gents" (a predecessor organization to The Cubs) which entertained troops stationed near Camp Douglas during World War I with dance contests and games of catch while supplies Were distributed;;and finally "The Whitechaps", later called simply "the Trumpets". During World War I many men left their jobs within agriculture or manufacturing to fight overseas or help feed America's war effort but not all residents returned home after hostilities ended – some stayed behind working various odd jobs or taking up agricultural land near Their homes where they farmed until 1922 when they sold their holdings back to the township government for development into what is now known as North Park neighborhood on Jackson Boulevard between LaSalle Street and State Street

One such building is the Old Post Office which was constructed in 1851 and is one of the oldest public buildings in Chicago. Chatham was founded in 1812 by Colonel Samuel Chatham. It was a small town in the years following the American Revolution. The area that is now Chatham was part of the Northwest Territory and it included parts of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. In 1819, President James K. Polk created the Missouri Compromise which divided Missouri between Kansas and Nebraska. This granted land to Kansas but did not give it to Nebraska. The town of Chatham became part of Omaha, Nebraska after that state was admitted into the United States in 1907.
