Chatham, Illinois is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 3,859 at the 2000 census. Chatham is located on the north side of Kane County and borders Aurora to the east, Carbon City to the west andNormal to the south. The first settler in Chatham was James Fenton in 1836. The current mayor of Chatham is Donny Whitehurst. Chatham has a library, post office and two schools: one public and one private. The original courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1922 but a replacement building was built soon afterwards. In 1902, Jack Hargrave founded Ralston Wagon Works which produced wagons for local farmers. After World War I, when demand for agricultural goods decreased, Hargrave closed his business in 1922. However, he continued to operate it as a truck stop until his death in 1984. Hargrave's business helped establish Chatham as an agricultural center with many local farmers selling their products from their storefronts around town. Over time however, retail sales have become more common and there are now several businesses that serve the community including a grocery store (Grocery Outlet), auto parts store (Auto Parts Depot) and pizza place (Pizza Hut).

Chatham is a town in Chatham County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1836. The first settler in what is now Chatham was Levi Coffin. He bought of land from the Sac and Fox Indians in 1836 and built a log cabin on it. In 1840 he married Susannah Burt. They had two children: Levi and Sarah. In 1840 John Nicolay moved to Chatham from Quincy, Illinois and opened the first store there. In 1850 he started the first post office here with his brother-in-law Prentice Ladd as clerk and mail carrier. The community grew rapidly; by 1860 it had a school, blacksmith shop, grocery store, sawmill, livery stable (later converted into an hotel), six churches (two Methodist and four Roman Catholic), five stores (four general stores and one paper mill), three hotels (one Greek Revival and two Romanesque Revival) and over 100 residents. By 1870 it had become a small city with its own jail, fire house, public square, library/ museum/ archives complex (now part of UIUC), water tower/ pumping station (now demolished), four Masonic lodges (three active], two insurance companies, fifteen businesses including nine restaurants/bars/, twelve farms/laboratories/, sixteen residences/chambers/, twelve miles of road frontage on three rivers bordering Chatham County - all within walking distance of each other - making it one of the most prosperous rural areas in America during that period The last major incorporation change took place on November 6th 1903 when Chatham became a village under the leadership of Mayor JT Kinghorn On July 1st 1907 all but one business closed before township status was granted due to increased competition from larger townships such as Peoria That same year Burnett Wills founded KW Flour Mill which would later become KW Mills Incorporated . At this time there were only 54 residents living in village form while 429 lived in town form
