By 1827, it had a population of over 100 people. In 1836, Chatham became the capital of Illinois Territory. It remained that way until 1861 when the state of Illinois was created. In that year, Chatham seceded from Illinois and became an independent republic known as Palmer County (later Stephenson County). Today, there is little remaining evidence of what once existed in Chatham. However, because of its history and reputation as a thriving community which welcomed newcomers throughout much of its century-long existence, Chatham has retained a strong sense of identity and community today.
Chatham is a small town in Chatham County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,874 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The land that now makes up Chatham was first settled by the Potawatomi tribe in 1812. They named their community after Admiral John Chatham, who had fought in the War of 1812 and lost an arm. The town was founded in 1837 as a result of the 1836 federalensus, when all of Cook County was organized into townships. Chatham grew rapidly during its early years due to its location on the Great Western Railroad and its access to water supplies from the Chenango River. By 1860, it had become one of the most important towns in Chatham County due to its position as an agent for railroads west of Chicago and itsrole as a center for education and industry. In 1870, local residents voted to incorporate as a city. In 1907, Chatham became one of fifteen communities consolidated into the newly created City of Chicago; however, it remained an agricultural center until World War II when heavy industry took over much of what had once been agriculture. In 1951, Chatham merged with neighboring village New London to form Holyoke Township; however this merger did not last long due to different goals for each municipality which led to various dissensions within Holyoke Township including two referendums allowing for split-up between Holyoke Township and New London which were both successful). In 1990, Chicagoland approved plans by then- Mayor Richard Moseley (D)to reduce street names in order rename Englewood North/South (now Near West Side), Fullerton Park/Lincoln Park (now South Side), Lincoln Square (now West Side), Englewood East/West (now Northwest Side), Midway Park/Lake Shore Drive (now Lakeview Area), Lawndale Heights/Englewood Hills (now Englewood Gardens) etc., following complaints from people living near street name changes that they felt they were losing their personal identifiers rather than gaining new ones like parks or neighborhoods specific to those areas. This plan became known as "Moses' Plan", after Mayor Richard Moseley's father Moses Moseley Sr., who helped lead Chicagoland's initial push for neighborhood renewal through legislation he sponsored in 1978 called "The Neighborhood Revival Act".

Chatham was founded on November 3, 1837 by Major General William Hull and Captain Samuel Nicholas. The first post office in Chatham was established on October 17, 1838. In 1846, the town became a village when it joined the larger city of Chicago. In 1961, Chatham merged with other nearby villages to form one municipality known as North Skokie Township. On January 1, 2013, North Skokie Township voted to dissolve and merge with neighboring village of Westchester to form one new municipality known as Hollandale Township which included most of what is now Chatham. The history of Chatham begins with Major General William Hull and Captain Samuel Nicholas who came to America in 1835 seeking opportunity and fortune. They were both natives of England but had come overLAND for opportunities that they could not find there at home. They set up camp near present day downtown Chicago while looking for land where they could start their own colony/township/village. The first post office in this newly formed town was established on October 17th 1838 under the name "Hull's Point." By 1840-1841 there were five stores and two hotels operating in this small community which soon grew into a thriving settlement with over 100 residents including thirty nine merchants all led by Captains Nicholas & Hull themselves! In 1861 when North Skokie Township merged with other nearby villages (South DeKalb County alsojoining), many people from these towns moved into old homes from Skokie Village & Hollandale Township - creating what we know today as "Chatham". This growth continued until about 1920 when things started to slow down & many businesses closed because transportation wasn't available or too expensive to operate on an individual basis anymore; so much so that almost all blacksmiths Local No 2 went out of business! But even then some businesses such as Laundromat kept going until after World War II when better transportation options became available! From 1951-1961 Chicaxonans gradually stopped moving into their original homes & began buying newer houses closer to Center City instead; although some did still move out into surrounding communities during this time period (eastern Cook County especially) due to economic reasons etc... It was only after the great recession hit America did people start again moving back into their original homes (& out of Chicago altogether!) Many people are still migrating back today due to job opportunities hereabouts! So overall, through various changes throughout its long history (and continuing growth), Chatham has managed to stay afloat despite difficult times!"
