It was named for Henry Augustus Chatham, an early settler and one of the original members of the first Territorial Congress that met in Champaign-Urbana in 1839 and adopted a pro-slavery platform. In 1847, Chatham became home to what is now the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Chatham's economy has been largely based on agriculture for most of its history; however, it has also been active in manufacturing since the 1920s when local businesses began to produce radios and other electronics products. Commercial development started in earnest during World War II when many locals joined forces with other nearby towns to create Champaign-Urbana's largest manufacturing base within reach of soldiers fighting overseas. Afterward, various businesses continue to prosper through suburban annexation or merger into larger companies over time.

Chatham is a town in Chatham County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,929 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria metropolitan area. The first settler in Chatham was Levi Coffin in 1811. The present town was founded on April 12, 1871 by James A. Griesbach and others as a result of the consolidation of two other towns: Greenfield and Centerville (now Arlington Heights). The name "Chatham" came from an old English fishing village located near Plymouth in Devon, England which had been abandoned due to pirates and whalers raiding it. The town was originally built on high ground overlooking the Chicago River and its tributaries. By 1920 most of the original downtown had been destroyed by fire, but some new buildings were constructed along State Street between First Avenue and Wabash Avenue. On January 5, 1907 Chatham merchants formed a cooperative to raise money for damages caused by a severe thunderstorm that struck their community during the Depression era; this event is generally considered to be the first organized business meeting in Chatham Township. In 1922-23 construction began on what became known as "the City Hall", which still stands today across from Central High School on State Street just south of Wabash Avenue. In 1951-52 Gordon Bierschmann donated land adjacent to his then-new brewery for development into what would become known as "Chatham Town Center". This area now includes portions of both Central High School and Wright Park Elementary Schools as well as several businesses including Casey's Irish Pub & Grill, Hooters restaurant, KFC fast food restaurant, Target store, Jamba Juice smoothie shop and several large homes dating back to at least 1930s including one currently used as a church sanctuary
The Chatham area is located in the southern half of Illinois and is named after General John Chatham, who served as a brigadier general in the United States Army during the Revolutionary War. The town was founded in 1828 by farmers who moved from nearby Peoria. Chatham became a bustling agricultural community and began to grow rapidly after it was designated as a county seat in 1837. The town continued to grow until it reached its current size by 1890. The population of Chatham peaked at over 2,000 in 1920, but has since declined slightly.
