Chatham was founded in 1836 by Captain John Chatham and his family as a small town on the shores of Lake Michigan. The village grew rapidly due to canal construction and other ventures by Chatham and his successors. In 1853, Chatham was incorporated as a city with a population of 30 residents. The city declined in popularity after World War II and later merged with neighboring Park Ridge to form the present-day Chicago suburb of Barrington Hills. The first settler in what is now Chatham was Captain John Chatham, who arrived there from Batavia, Illinois in 1836. He built a log cabin near the present day intersection of North Kankakee Avenue and West State Street on the shore of Lake Michigan where he named his new settlement "Chatham." By 1840, about 60 people lived in this small community which soon became an important port for trade with much of central Illinois due to its location on navigable waterways and its access to markets outside of Springfield Township (now Kane County). In 1850,Captain John Chatham's nephew William Fenton took over management of the community from their uncle and developed it into what it became today – a busy commercial center serving many villages within Kane County as well as far away parts of north-central Illinois such as Rockford Heights and Bolingbrook. By 1860, approximately 200 people lived in Chatham while it boasted one store/warehouse, two blacksmiths' shops (one operated by Captains George Tilton & Lewis Wetherbee), three churches (Episcopal Church built in 1856; Methodist Church built circa 1860; First BaptistChurch built circa 1830), four schools (elementary school opened November 25th, 1851; high school opened September 14th1889), six boatyards (four operated by Captains George Tilton & Lewis Wetherbee; two operated by Elias Dearborn), five sawmills (one operating by Captains George Tilton & Lewis Wetherbee) along with several businesses including four physicians: Drury Hennepin Drury & Company physician/surgeons; Lazarus Nourse Doctorfry Co., druggists; James Dickey Proctor Machine Shop Company merchants - all located within one half mile radius around downtown center where water transportation ceased about 1870 when new locks were constructed making shipping much more difficult Chatham experienced rapid growth during its early years thanks to Canal Construction activity spearheaded by Captain John Chatham himself along with associates Isaac Meeker & Jonathan Gossett among others along with contributions from many civic boosters including prominent citizens such as Colonel Abraham Lincoln who donated land for canal completion near current day Lombard Road For many years untilreek Lumber had one store/warehouse on East Greenbrier Road just south side ZIP code 60534 while established local milliners like Mrs Rawlings Sisters ran several stores between Lombard Road eastward into Park Ridge before moving out west onto I-80 Exit 294A although they did maintain some shop stock at their old locations until after 1990 After Years Of Decline And eventual Merger With ParkRidge
