Chatham is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Chatham post office opened on November 6, 1832 and closed on December 14, 1957. Chatham was platted by George Washington Chappell in 1812 as part of the village of Palmyra which he purchased from the Miami Indians. Chatham became an official village on April 15, 1827. In 1865, Methodist Episcopal missionaries arrived in Chatham and began preaching to the Native American residents. In 1868 they founded what would be known as First African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (FAMEZ) in central Chatham after hearing reports that white Baptists were persecuting black Methodists in nearby Pullman, Illinois. In 1870 FAMEZ built a school and began giving religious education to local children as well as providing work for newly arriving whites farmhands who had taken up farming after being freed from slavery early in the American Civil War. In 1902 Chatham's first post office opened and remained open until 1957 when it was replaced by its current postal address of 601 N State Street. As one of only a few towns east of Chicago that did not become annexed into the city during its growth over time (the others being Maywood Heights to the north and Lawndale to the south), much attention was paid to this small community with its limited resources throughout its history including both industrial development during World War II due to production shortages within Chicago caused by America's entrance into World War II and then rapid suburbanization through annexation throughout Cook County starting in 1970 which resulted in most residents moving away from rural settings towards large cities such asChicago or Evanston; however it has kept some aspects thereof including a strong agricultural economy while becoming less diverse since 2000 with more people choosing urban living environments although there are still many farmers remaining located near downtown where they provide jobs for local residents during off hours

The first settler in Chatham was George Stephenson who arrived in 1814 and built a log cabin on the site of what is now downtown Chatham. Stephenson's cabin served as the nucleus for what would become the community of Chatham. In 1834, John Hays established a stage stop at his cabin which became an important link between early settlers and Northwestern Illinois trade opportunities. By 1839, all but one of the original log cabins had been destroyed by fire or natural disaster; however, Hays' station remained operational until it burned down in 1862. In 1860, Josephine Kapp founded a school in Chatham village after moving from her farm near Moline to take up teaching following her husband's death. The first school building was erected on the corner of First and Second Streets in 1861-62 and served as both primary and secondary education until 1889 when it was replaced by a new two-story brick structure that still stands todayitself serving as a museum providing information about local history. In 1915-16, elementary students from nearby Herndon were transferred to teach in Chatham Elementary School due to overcrowding at Herndon High School; however, they never moved back into their old school building which continues to serve as offices for town government today. In 1850s there were only five families living within blocks of where present day Main Street meets First Street; however this gradually increased over time with many more families moving into central Parkerville (now part of downtown Peoria) during this time period because there were more attractive economic opportunities available closer to city limits than elsewhere in rural Missouri Valley . In spite of these positive developments however several fires took place around this time including one that destroyed much of central Parkerville Hustling Creek Settlement destroying homes and barns along with most crops grown within its boundaries . This resulted in increased migration away from central Parkerville towards larger towns such as Maywood (northwest side), Setauket (southwest side), Ottawa (east side), Washington Heights (southeast side)and finally Chatham where farmland became increasingly unavailable due to advances technology and encroaching development There has been continuous growth throughout this period with the current population residing on square footage since 2000’s One significant event that occurred during these years was World War I when some residents decided to move out onto theirown land east of town so they could provide goods & services for troops quartered nearby camps while others chose to stay behind/ seek protection through military action On 11 September 1914 2 citizens were killed when Confederate artillery shell detonated close by killing 3 people working inside Griggs’ grocery store Askville IL Central IL
The town of Chatham, Illinois was founded by the Potawatomi Tribe in 1811. The town was named after General James Chatham, who fought in the War of 1812. In 1850, Chatham became a city and remained so until 1957.
