Chatham was a small community in Illinois that was founded by Captain James Cook and his crew on October 14, 1795. The town was named after the Chatham Islands, located in the Polynesia group of islands. The islands were first sighted by Columbus when he sailed through the area in his flagship, Christopher Columbus in 1493. After exploratory voyages to the area, Cook's crew discovered an island off of Chatham on July 24, 1795 while sailing from Botany Bay to England. It is not clear if this island was actually part of the Chatham Islands as described by Columbus or if it was simply another name for one of the many uninhabited islands off of Ireland at that time. Captain Cook's original settlement at Chatham consisted of only 11 people and lasted for about two years before being destroyed by a storm which swept through the area. A new settlement was established at present-day Chatham with 10 people on December 2, 1800 after a failed attempt to establish a permanent settlement on one of the larger groups of nearby islands called Gull Island. The population continued to grow throughout the 19th century until World War II when it peaked at around 100 people due to immigration from Europe and other parts of America. However, today there are only a few remaining residents who continue their historical traditions including playing favorite pastime catch and collecting artifacts from local sites.
