Channahon is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,733 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Channahon was founded in 1881 by David Channahon and his family as a cabin community on the banks of the Mississippi River. The first post office was established in 1882 and the first school was opened in 1883. By 1890, Channahon had a population of over 100 people. The town became an unincorporated community after it lost its status as a township in 1903. In 1925, Channahon incorporated as a village and adopted its current name from the town of Canaan, Tennessee, which had been renamed for General James Swayne during World War I. From 1957 to 2003, Channahon was served by its own police department; however, that department surrendered jurisdiction to Kane County sheriff's deputies upon merger with neighboring Kane County. Today, Channahon consists primarily of agricultural businesses and residences within walking distance of several churches and schools located within close-by shopping malls. A small portion of the town has become known for hosting annual Fourth of July celebrations complete with fireworks displays across the river from downtown Chicago while most other activities take place inside or near surrounding villages such as Eden Prairie (to the east), Mokena (to the north), Deerfield (to the west), or Romeoville (southwest). Channahon is one of few communities in McLean County that still retains significant manufacturing capabilities dating back to before World War II including blast furnaces used to produce munitions grade aluminum and chrome products until 1971; steel mills built between 1915 and 1950; light truck production beginning in 1960; printing plants closed between 1970 and 1980; among many others. Channahon is a small town in the west side of Illinois. It was founded in 1853 by Peter Channahon and his wife, Rachel. The population of Channahon was 1,500 at the time of its incorporation. John Fritsch, who arrived in Channahon in 1856 and became one of the town's first residents, helped to create what is now the downtown district. He also built the first school in Channahon, which he named after himself. In 1865, Fritsch donated land for a Methodist church and cemetery on Park Street. The community's first pastor was Rev. Samuel Laddsberry Sr., who served from 1865 to 1868. Theodore Roosevelt spent two weeks living in Channahon during his presidential campaign of 1904; he delivered an impromptu speech at the home of Mrs. Auld on Park Street. During World War I, munitions plants were located near Channahon that produced munitions for Great Britain and France; however, because these plants were not subject to United States regulations, no damage resulted from the war effort. In 1951, Stroud-Merrill Corporation made a major investment into Channahon with plans to establish a new City Hall and several other businesses within the town limits alone (though those businesses did not actually open until later). However, due to economic troubles at Merrill Lynch throughout much of 1960s America (the housing market crashed), many people left or sold their homes in order to move into towns such as Merrillville or La Grange-Joliet while they awaited developments that would make their neighborhoods more viable again financially (these developments never happened). In recent years there have been sporadic attempts by developers to resurrect interest within certain parts of town by creating new businesses or residential areas within walking distance from old businesses/residential districts dating back before 1950--this has generally failed though some areas like Main Street have seen increased development over time including commercial corridors with large yards surrounding them - making it difficult for pedestrians or bicyclists accessing most aspects of town center without getting lost amidst towering buildings
